Ah, yes, the recommendation is what will (in theory) set Strands apart. And yes, I suppose it would be open for abuse, if Strands allowed it to be abused. Could something like "PayPerRecommendation" arrive? Perhaps... but I would expect the community would see through that, and folks who were gaming the system wouldn't be allowed into one's network. It will be interesting to see how things play out; since one's network (that drives the recommendations) is opt-in, I'm not sure how well it would work to game it (unless Strands did something fishy, which I don't expect).

Isn't the recommendation algorithm the unique feature of Strands? I am pointing out the integrity of that feature to not be gamed by marketing as a potential unique problem of Strands.

doc normal raises valid points, but they're not new with Strands... look at Tumblr, FriendFeed, or probably the biggest example: Facebook. There has been plenty of discussion surrounding who owns the data and how can it be mined for marketing. It's a valid concern, but doesn't seem Strands-specific.

This concept concerns me. The technology is cool but how do I know if I own my own data/lifestream? What are the privacy policies? Will they sell my lifestream data (and my friends lifestreams) to marketing firms? How can the platform avoid being purposly gamed by marketing firms, injecting recommendations hidden in my friends authoritative lifestreams? It seems this could be a new form of very subtle spam.
