Engineering Manager, Core App Team
|Company Name||New Relic|
|Date Posted||Apr 11, 2012|
Are you the special person who will manage some of our fast-growing Core App engineering team? You really do need to be special for this. Our engineers are particularly smart, creative, hard-working, and capable collaborators. They need leadership, not supervision. Management at NR leads by example, focusing on providing resources, running interference, and keeping folks informed. If you're a command-and-control person, this is not the right place for you. But if you're a talented software engineer who loves helping others do their best work and wants to really hone your management skills, we might be the perfect place.
Management here is serious business. We have the best management mentoring program in any start-up -- perhaps the best, period. It is hard work. Your job as an engineering manager is to enable the engineers to do great things. That could mean sitting in meetings so that the engineers don't have to; it could mean telling the executives to stop changing their minds so that engineers can focus and deliver; it could mean coaching an engineer all night through their first big conference presentation. It means whatever it takes to help our engineers to do the best work they have ever done--and have fun doing it! (Of course, you'll have fun too)
For the Core App team, we're looking for someone who understands the fast-turn, agile (or SaaS) lifecycle, continuous deployment, and everything about "Lean Startup". We want someone who is happy being the enabler behind the team--someone who thinks that the fact that our recruiting video features our engineers and not their managers is right-headed. And someone who has been shipping in a technical lead role for a couple of years or more.
You'll be a serious candidate if you have had several years of experience being a great engineer, a track record of delivering socially complex projects (must be able to demonstrate or it's a "no go"), and a real interest in being a great engineering manager. Tell us about your management philosophy in your cover letter and give examples of your risk-reward thinking with releases. And, of course, we want to hear why you might be particularly interested in New Relic.

We are turning the APM marketplace upside down by providing SaaS products that deliver high-value functionality previously only available through enterprise software. We are well above 17,000 customers. And with your help we’ll get to 10x that number.
New Relic is a Top 100 OnDemand Company, Best of SaaS (THINKStrategies), Top 100 Coolest Cloud Computing (CRN); 10 Cloud Management Companies to Watch (NetworkWorld); the list of accolades goes on. More important, we provide challenging work, opportunities to learn, high quality teammates, a great product, a company on the move, and . . . the freedom to do your work the way only you can do it.
