NWEA has several openings for full-time Front and Back-End Java Software Developers at our NW Portland location.


The Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) is a growing non-profit organization committed to improving K-12 academic student learning throughout the nation. We offer software solutions that deliver research-based adaptive assessments, detailed reporting of student achievement and growth, and professional training. School teachers and administrators use this information to accurately determine individual student instructional needs, tailor lessons and design school improvement plans. Position summary


NWEA Software Developers create high-quality software for NWEA clients and internal users, and are expected to be fully adept in the software languages used or required by NWEA. Employees in this position must be adaptable to changing technology environments, and work collaboratively with all participants in a software development project. Software Developers may be called upon to fulfill functions related to software development that are not specifically software programming, such as requirements gathering, producing documentation, and quality assurance testing.



This specific position will contribute on a Scrum team responsible for the continued development of the User Interface for our core web-based Software as a Service product.


Detailed Description

Responsibilities


Collaborate with the Product Management team to determine software requirements
Create prototypes to help clarify software requirements
Contribute to the creation of elegant software designs which will to guide the implementation of the requirements
Provide accurate time estimates for development tasks
Construct and verify (unit test) software components to meet design specifications
Collaborate with quality assurance engineers to resolve software defects
Collaborate on software design, construction, testing, deployment, and best practices with other members of your Scrum team
Perform code reviews of constructed software deliverables
Adhere to and improve NWEA’s software development methodology
Adhere to the concepts of Test Driven Development and Continuous Improvement
Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the success of the team and the entire organization


Skills and Abilities


Ability to successfully develop software conforming to a Java EE multi-tier System Architecture.
Ability to successfully develop web-based software UI components using technologies such as JSF, RichFaces, AJAX, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, etc.
Familiarity with and ability to articulate and implement JavaScript best practices.
Ability to implement AJAX browser side functionality to support the implementation of an Enterprise class, high concurrency, web-based, Software as a Service product.
Ability to implement browser side functionality using JQuery and JQuery UI.
Demonstrate an understanding of the IOC/DI paradigm and the use of an industry standard IOC Container. Spring preferred.
Use of an industry standard ORM. Hibernate preferred.
Experience with Maven, Nexus, Continuous Integration, etc.
Experience with SQL development and willingness to apply that experience in a PostgreSQL environment.
Experience working in a collaborative, cross-functional, team based environment.
Demonstrated experience using an industry standard source code repository. Subversion preferred.
Ability to follow through with all tasks, promises and commitments.
Ability to communicate and work effectively within priorities.
Ability to advocate ideas and to objectively participate in design critiques.
Ability to work under tight timelines in a fast-paced environment.
Understanding of software design concepts.
Understanding of software development methodologies.


Education and Experience



Minimum Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field; equivalent combinations of experience and education will be considered in lieu of a degree
Minimum four years progressive experience in a software development environment in high growth technology companies
Experience with one or more programming languages; experience in development of product oriented applications
