# Whiffies plays host to gluttony for the good of geeks

The sweet or savory deep fried darling of the Portland, Oregon, startup scene these days isn’t one of our traditional startups. Sure, it’s got a [Twitter account](http://twitter.com/whiffies "Whiffies on Twitter"). Yes, it’s a popular hangout for many of the usual gang in the Portland tech scene. And, of course, it gets most of its work done during [\#afterhours](http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23afterhours). But this startup? It makes pies.

Meet [Whiffies](http://fastwonderblog.com/2009/06/01/community-mini-case-study-whiffies-on-twitter/ "Mini case study on Whiffies"), the food cart playing host to a very special pie eating contest tonight—[Pie Champ 2.0](http://ourpdx.com/2009/06/pie-champ-20-its-so-on/ "Pie Champ 2.0: It's so on")—raising money for [Free Geek](http://www.freegeek.org/ "Free Geek"), our awesome local geeky recycling center.

That’s right. What could be better than watching a bunch of geeks—like [Aaron Hockley](http://twitter.com/ahockley "Aaron Hockley on Twitter") and [Chris Snethen](http://twitter.com/christom "Chris Snethen on Twitter")—stuff their face full of pies in hopes of becoming the [Whiffies Pie Champ](http://twitter.com/piechamp "Whiffies Pie Champ")? How about [engaging in gratuitous gluttony for a good cause](http://ourpdx.com/2009/06/tonight-time-to-eat-pie-for-free-geek/ "Time to eat pie for Free Geek")—all thanks to [OurPDX](http://ourpdx.com "OurPDX")?

And yes, the rumors are true. [I am still among the uninitiated in terms of the Whiffies magic](http://ourpdx.com/2009/06/memoir-of-a-pie-virgin/ "Memoir of a Pie Virgin"). Hostess fruit pies? I’ve got that down. But Whiffies? Not yet.
