# Open source and mobile: Learn more about the Moblin Linux platform at Mobile Portland tonight

\[HTML2\]There are usually three things for which I like to claim that Portland serves as the “[de facto hub](http://siliconflorist.com/?s=%22de+facto+hub%22 "Portland is the de facto hub for...")“: open source, OpenID, and mobile.

And tonight, two of those worlds collide—[open source and mobile](http://mobileportland.com/content/moblin-open-source-software-mobile-internet-devices-and-netbooks "Moblin: Open Source Software for Mobile Internet Devices and Netbooks")—thanks to [Mobile Portland](http://mobileportland.com/ "Mobile Portland") and [Moblin](http://moblin.org/ "Moblin"), an open source project for mobile development [hosted by the Linux Foundation](http://moblin.org/about-moblin/linux-foundation-host-moblin-project "Linux Foundation to Host Moblin Project"). And it’s not just for phones. It’s for netbooks, as well.

Sound interesting? Well, you’re going to want to [mosey on over to AboutUs for Mobile Portland](http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/3081361/ "RSVP for Mobile Portland"), tonight at 6 PM.

What is [Moblin attempting to accomplish](http://moblin.org/about-moblin "Moblin overview")?

> Moblin is an optimized Linux platform that provides a modern, engaging user experience for mobile devices, such as netbooks, MIDs, and IVI systems. Moblin has a common core of Application and User Interface services and APIs, which provide application developers a rich and consistent development environment across multiple device form factors.

Not only does the combined open source and mobile focus make it Portland-y, it’s got another Silicon Forest tie-in: [Intel](http://intel.com "Intel"). You see, the folks leading up the project are part of the [Intel Open Source Technology Center](http://software.intel.com/sites/oss/ "Intel and open source software"):

> **[Bob Spencer](http://www.linkedin.com/pub/bob-spencer/4/95/794 "Bob Spencer")** \[of Portland\] works at the Open Source Technology Center (OSTC) at Intel as a software developer. He is focused on working with the Linux Foundation developing the compliance specs for Moblin.\[HTML1\]
>
> **[Mike Shaver](http://www.michaelshaver.com/ "Mike Shaver")** \[of Portland\] also works at the OSTC and is focused on building out the web infrastructure and community for Moblin.\[HTML1\]
>
> **Paul Cooper** is located at the London office of OSTC and manages a team of Moblin developers working on the user experience functionality.
