Portland’s Small Society builds an iPhone app for a little coffee shop called Starbucks

[HTML2]Turns out even coffee shops need iPhone apps. Well, they do if they’re Starbucks. Two even. And now the official Starbucks iPhone drink app—myStarbucks—is available from the App Store.

Yes, yes. Starbucks is headquartered in Seattle, I know. And even though a number of sites were covering the app launch—including Portland-based iPhoneSlutz—I didn’t really have any Silicon Forest angle on it.

So why am I writing about it now? Well, because as it turns out, the Starbucks app was created by none other than Small Society here in Portland.

What’s it do? Well, here’s a quick take on myStarbucks.

We were pleased to be selected to work with Starbucks® on this project. The myStarbucks App will help a customer find a store, build a custom drink, and choose the perfect treat. But, even better yet, a coffee lover can share their drink with a friend over Bluetooth, so that they can order the next round. To date it has been one of our most challenging projects, and one of which we are most proud.

Even if you don’t like Starbucks, the app is worth a look. I started mucking with it and was stuck in there for 10 minutes just clicking around.

Quad con panna iPhone styleLike other Small Society projects, the myStarbucks app has an extremely well designed and intuitive interface. And I don’t know about you, but if I had to guess? I’d say this has Brandon Sneed written all over it. And likely some Andrew Pouliot. Not to mention, I’m happy to learn that my favorite Starbucks drink—the quad espresso con panna—is only 30 calories.

So it’s an iPhone app. Why is this news? Well, for one thing, it’s a damn fine iPhone app. But more importantly, it’s yet another example of well known companies coming to Portland to get their apps built—and another win for Small Society.

We’ve got some incredibly interesting mobile development happening here. And it’s just starting to snowball.

This iPhone and mobile thing? It might just catch on.

  5. I’m not complaining at all, but why are there two apps for this? If my iPhone would let me run background apps, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but it seems like these apps would be perfect if combined. Either way, I downloaded both and used both today, very nice (but one app would still be better IMHO).

  6. If this program can somehow show store hours — that elusive bit of information you can’t even get on the Starbucks web site — then the singularity is truly near. 😉

  7. Those that I know who are slogging away at trying to get adoption of mobile payments also excited about Starbucks launching an iPhone payment option.

Smartphones and large merchant adoption are going to change how we buy again. Good buy cards, hello chips (eventually)
