# In Portland, every day is Foursquare day. But April 16? It’s a swarm for the official Portland Foursquare Day.

[Like Twitter before it](http://www.oregonlive.com/special/index.ssf/2008/05/twitter_is_tweeter.html "twitter is tweeter"), the Portland tech community has been an early and fervent adopter of [Foursquare](http://foursquare.com "Foursquare"), the social location service that captured attention by adding a gaming aspect to the concept of “checking in.” Now, the geek crowd is often heard mumbling about tagging and badges. And arguing over mayorships and proper Foursquare protocol.

And now, Portland has a chance to show Foursquare just how much they like their service by participating in [Portland Foursquare Day swarm](http://4sqday.com/city/Portland "Portland Foursquare Day swarm") tomorrow, April 16.

What’s [Foursquare Day](http://blog.4sqday.com/ "Foursquare Day") you ask? Well, [here’s how the whole thing came about](http://blog.foursquare.com/post/523695214/a-few-weeks-back-a-bunch-of-crazy-kids-down-in "Origins of Foursquare Day"):

> A few weeks back, a bunch of crazy kids down in Tampa had this idea to claim April 16th (TOMORROW!) as Foursquare Day. Being nerds ourselves we couldn’t resist the math nerdiness of it: 4 squared = 16. 4/16. Get it? Foursquare Day? Ha!

> We’ve gotten word that there are 150+ foursquare day parties behind held around the world… from Boston to San Francisco to Santiago, Chile to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Not to be left out of the mix, [Portland will be hosting its own Foursquare Day](http://4sqday.com/city/Portland "Portland Foursquare Day swarm"). The [swarm of Foursquare aficionados](http://4sqday.com/event/portland-foursquare-day-swarm "Portland Four Square Day swarm") will take place at the [The Lion’s Eye Tavern](http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=9419611501185245575&q=lions+eye+tavern+portland&hl=en&cd=1&ei=unrHS9fDHZX4zAST0OSgBA&sll=45.479711,-122.579289&sspn=0.096229,0.21322&ie=UTF8&ll=45.556612,-122.76123&spn=0,0&t=h&z=12&iwloc=A "The Lion's Eye Tavern") beginning at 8 PM and running until… well until people are concerned about losing the mayorship of their usual haunts.

**\[UPDATE\]**

[As noted below](http://siliconflorist.com/2010/04/15/portland-foursquare-day-swarm-portland-foursquare-day/comment-page-1/#comment-12777 "Cami Kaos on the Whiffies swarm"), there is also a swarm attempt at [Whiffies](http://foursquare.com/venue/60578 "Whiffies on Foursquare") from 10 PM to midnight.

And yes. [Of course there’s a badge for Foursquare Day](http://blog.4sqday.com/2010/04/official-badge/ "Foursquare Day Official Badge"), silly.

So here’s your plans for tomorrow evening. Ready? Go check in at the [Green Dragon](http://foursquare.com/venue/39705 "Green Dragon on Foursquare") for [Beer and Blog Portland hosted by Webvisions](http://portland.beerandblog.com/2010/04/12/webvisions-offering-discounted-tickets-and-buying-a-round-to-celebrate/ "WebVisions offering discounted tickets and buying a round to celebrate") then go [check in at Cartopia](http://foursquare.com/venue/96163 "Cartopia on Foursquare") to replenish your reserves then head over to [Lion’s Eye to partake in the swarm](http://foursquare.com/venue/1486916 "Lion's Eye on Foursquare").

Because, honestly? You could use another badge.
