# Making making mobile apps easier: PhoneGap celebrates PhoneGap Day in Portland

If there’s one thing that is obvious about the Portland startup and tech scene, it’s that we’ve got a fair amount of those mobile development and strategy types around here. Building stuff for iOS and Android and MeeGo and a variety of other platforms.

I know. Thank you, Capt Obvious. But did you know that there’s a really interesting way to build native apps on multiple mobile platforms [using HTML5 and JavaScript](http://www.phonegap.com/about "About PhoneGap"). There is. It’s true. It’s called [PhoneGap](http://www.phonegap.com/ "PhoneGap"). And they’re here in Portland celebrating [PhoneGap Day](http://www.phonegap.com/community/events/phonegap-day/ "PhoneGap Day") and the launch of PhoneGap 1.0 on Friday July 29.

> After OSCON we’ll be heading over to Urban Airship where we’ll have phones, apps, js frameworks, tools and delicious beers for all to enjoy. In addition to some hacking with other PhoneGap addicts, there will be talks on getting started with PhoneGap, high-speed demos, and short presentations from PhoneGap developers.

Wait. What? You can build native apps using stuff you already know? And you still get access to gyroscopes and sounds and whatnot? I know right?

I’m not even going to ask you if this sounds interesting. I’m just going to [encourage you to attend PhoneGap Day at Urban Airship](http://phonegapday.eventbrite.com/ "PhoneGap Day"), tomorrow.

> Starting at 1:00pm, we will gather at Urban Airship where the PhoneGap 1.0 party will begin! We’ll have phones, apps, js frameworks, tools and delicious beers for all to enjoy.

> In addition to some hacking with other PhoneGap addicts, we’ll have afternoon talks on getting started with PhoneGap, high-speed demos, and short presentations from PhoneGap developers including folks from Dojo and IBM.
