# PHP Fog gets $8 million and a new name: AppFog

A little late on this one, but I wanted to make sure that you knew about it. Especially because it’s another startup getting funding. It’s been a busy few weeks for Portland in that regard.

The latest company to gain additional funding for its pursuits? [AppFog](http://appfog.com/ "AppFog") which just [secured $8 million in investment led by Ignition Partners](http://www.oregonlive.com/silicon-forest/index.ssf/2011/08/cloud_computing_shines_on_portland_startups_appfog.html "Cloud computing shines on Portland startups AppFog and Cedexis"). Never heard of them? It’s no wonder. It’s the new name for [PHP Fog](http://phpfog.com "PHP Fog").

What does PHP Fog do? Well, they make moving your PHP applications to the cloud much easier.

> PHP Fog is the best cloud hosting platform for PHP. We provide a reliable, scalable, fast PHP service using all the latest cloud technology.

> Best of all, it works perfectly with all your existing PHP applications. WordPress, Drupal, Joomla or even frameworks like Zend, Cake and Kohana all work seamlessly.

But does the name change mean they’re moving away from PHP? Not at all. [According to AppFog](http://blog.phpfog.com/2011/08/11/what-php-fog-will-do-with-8m/ "What PHP Fog will do with $8 million"):

> PHP is still our [\#1](https://siliconflorist.com/tag/1/) focus. We are dedicated to providing the best PaaS experience to PHP developers around the world. The AppFog name shows that we have a broader game-plan, but our heart is still in PHP.

> Think of it like Amazon. At first, all they sold was books, and they sold books better than anyone. They built their reputation around books and started expanding until they took over online shopping as we know it. PHP is our first love and we are building the best experience around PHP, but we intend to expand our technology base with the new money and the new name bringing the same great reputation and experience to other languages.

How will PHP… err AppFog use the money? Learn more in their [blog post about the funding](http://blog.phpfog.com/2011/08/11/what-php-fog-will-do-with-8m/ "What PHP Fog will do with $8 million").
