# Sequoia Capital: Apple, Oracle, Cisco… and Jive Software

Unlike the late 90s, these days, when someone launches a new Web site, it’s not generally news. But when that someone is [Sequoia Capital](http://sequoiacap.com "Sequoia Capital")—one of the most successful venture capital firms in the Valley—[people take notice](http://venturebeat.com/2012/09/15/sequoia-capital-ditches-boring-search-bar-in-favor-of-impressive-founders/ "For a look behind VC curtain, check out Sequoia Capital’s new website").

But what struck me was that—sitting among a who’s who of the tech elite—was a face we get to see here around town on a regular basis.

That’s right. There among names like Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison, among tech darlings like Cisco, YouTube, AirBnB, and Instagram, sits a company with a very substantial Portland presence: [Jive Software](http://jivesoftware.com "Jive Software").

Things have changed drastically around Portland in the past 18 months in terms of funding, access to capital, and startup success. But it’s truly thanks to pioneering companies like Jive and founders like [Bill Lynch](http://twitter.com/billjive "Bill Lynch") and [Matt Tucker](http://twitter.com/matttucker "Matt Tucker") who have paved the way for other startup to follow.

Nice to see them getting recognition on such a grand stage.
