I’m not saying any of you would do this, but there’s always that one house on the block. That one that leaves its holiday lights up all year round. Not that they turn them on, mind you. But they’re up.

I always wonder what would happen if they could change the colors of those lights—to say red, white, and blue for the Fourth or green for St Patrick’s Day or pink for Valentine’s. Then I might not look so lazy. Ahem. They. They might not look so lazy.

That’s one of the many reasons I’m psyched about Lumenplay, a local company that’s built a smartphone controllable—and hackable—smart LED light system. And they’re raising money for it in a very hometown fashion. By using our local crowdsourcing platform Crowd Supply.

They’re going after a sizable goal of more than $159,000. Which they’re trying to hit by August 15. Currently, they’re edging up on $10,000. So they’ve got a ways to go. But they’ve also got a lot of time to get there.

And clearly, I’m not the only one who’s impressed by these things.

Honestly, as cool as these lights are, I’m even more excited to see what happens once the Dorkbot crowd gets ahold of them and starts hacking them. It’s another interesting piece of technology with which to create. And I’m sure there are any number of Portland types already salivating at the potential.
