# Half-assing it no longer: Portland Business Journal focuses reporter Malia Spencer on Portland startups

It’s no secret, we’ve had some half-assed coverage of Portland startups for a long, long time. I do a crappy job. [Mike Rogoway](http://twitter.com/rogoway "Mike Rogoway") at [The Oregonian](http://blog.oregonlive.com/siliconforest "Silicon Forest blog") has to cover everything from gigantic corporations to the smallest startups. As do any number of other journalists at other outlets around town who have a ton on their plates. Big tech blogs only check in from time to time. But that all changes now. Meet [Malia Spencer](http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/blog/2013/11/meet-pbjs-new-tech-and-finance-reporter.html "Hello Portland from the PBJ's new tech and finance reporter").

> A little about me. I got to Portland two weeks ago after a cross country trek from Pittsburgh, the city I have called home for the last four years.

> While in the Steel City I covered technology, manufacturing and most recently energy for our sister paper the Pittsburgh Business Times. I was brought to Portland to cover the startup scene here as well as banking and finance. I’m originally from the California Bay Area, so I am glad to be back on the Western side of the country—though my time out East was great.

Now. Finally. There is someone focused on the Portland startup scene. This is really, really good news. And it’s already having an impact.
