# How the Internet works: Jessica McKellar slated for December New Relic FutureTalk

When the Portland office of [New Relic](http://newrelic.com "New Relic") mentioned that they were going to start [a series of speaking events called FutureTalks](http://siliconflorist.com/2013/10/31/future-talks-relic-launches-series-tech-talks-designed-inspire/ "New Relic launches a new series of Portland tech talks designed to inspire"), I was pretty excited. First, because it meant that New Relic would be even more involved with the local tech scene around here—which is awesome. And second, because a company like New Relic has a significant amount of pull in the industry—which means awesome speakers.

And they didn’t disappoint.

> Next up, we’ll have Jessica McKellar at New Relic’s Portland office next month to give us an introduction to the Internet’s structure and protocols through fun experiments from the Python perspective. Jessica is an entrepreneur, software engineer, and open source developer from Cambridge, MA. She’s also a Director for the Python Software Foundation and an organizer for the largest Python user group in the world. With that group she runs the Boston Python Workshop—an introductory programming pipeline that has brought hundreds of women into the local Python community.

The event will take place Monday, December 2 at 6PM. It will be hosted at New Relic. The company continues to line up speakers for the coming months. [Amber Case will speak in January](http://blog.newrelic.com/2013/11/22/new-futuretalk-series-portland/ "New FutureTalk Series in Portland").
