# Rise of the Indie Web: Amber Case at New Relic Future Talks, January 13

[New Relic](http://newrelic.com "New Relic") kicks off its new year of Future Talks with a local speaker—who has worldwide appeal. [Amber Case](http://caseorganic.com/ "Amber Case")—cofounder of [Portland startup Geoloqi which was acquired by Esri in 2012](http://siliconflorist.com/2012/10/15/geoloqi-acquired-esri/ "Geoloqi acquired by Esri")—has spoken at [TED](http://www.ted.com/talks/amber_case_we_are_all_cyborgs_now.html "Amber Case: We are all cyborgs now") and keynoted [SXSW](http://schedule.sxsw.com/2012/events/event_IAP992057 "Ambient Location and the Future of the Interface"). Now, she’ll be speaking here in Portland.

The topic? The Indie Web. And figuring out how to retain control of the data we create online.

> What happens when an online service you use freezes your account, loses your data, or goes out of business? Have you ever used a service by a company that suddenly went under, stranding your data? What happened to the Internet in 2003? Do you own your own identity or do you sharecrop? Who owns your data and why? Case will talk about data ownership, identity and the Indie Web, a movement that is taking back ownership of one’s own identity and data instead of sharecropping on 3rd party websites.

The event takes place at New Relic on Monday, January 13, beginning at 6PM. Space is limited.
