# Portland continues its quest to become the regional office capital of the world

Now, we all know the big names who have regional offices here. Well, **the** big name: Intel, whose campuses in Hillsboro contain the largest group of Intel employees, anywhere. And there’s HP and IBM and Synopsys. But a growing number of startup companies are setting up regional offices here, as well. And it shows no signs of slowing.

You already knew it was happening. Just glancing at the [Silicon Florist Job Board](http://siliconflorist.com/jobs "Silicon Florist Job Board") or the [Portland Startups Switchboard](http://pdxstartups.switchboardhq.com "Portland Startups Switchboard") sort of gives it away. And today, [we learned that ebay was expanding its Portland presence](http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/blog/2014/08/ebay-goes-all-in-in-portland-expects-to-hire.html?ana=twt&page=all "EBay goes all-in in Portland, makes room for additional 200 employees").

So who all in the tech and startup scene has a regional office here? Well, let’s see. Off the top of my head…

- If rumors are to be believed, [Airbnb](http://airbnb.com "Airbnb") already has 100 employees in [its Portland offices](http://blog.airbnb.com/airbnb-portland/ "Airbnb Portland")
- [AppNexus](http://careers.appnexus.com/offices/north-america/portland "AppNexus Portland") is standing up an office
- Drupal shop [Acquia has space here](http://www.acquia.com/about-us/newsroom/press-releases/acquia-opens-new-office-portland-oregon-dec-18-2012 "Acquia Opens New Office in Portland, Oregon")
- [Aruba Networks](http://www.arubanetworks.com/ "Aruba Networks") has a Portland office [through its Meridian acquisition](http://siliconflorist.com/2013/06/07/told-meridians-26-million-cash-exit-incredibly-important-portland-startup-scene/ "Now it can be told: Why Meridian’s $26 million all cash exit is incredibly important for the Portland startup scene")
- [BBVA](http://bbva.com "BBVA") has a Portland footprint here [through its Simple acquisition](https://www.simple.com/blog/the-next-chapter "Simple: The next chapter")
- [Esri](http://www.esri.com/ "Esri") has a Portland office through [its Geoloqi acquisition](https://geoloqi.com/esri-faq "Geoloqi and Esri FAQ")
- Google has folks here for a while; [as Google Fiber goes in](http://www.theverge.com/2014/6/16/5814380/google-fiber-is-cleared-to-land-in-portland "Google Fiber is cleared to land in Portland"), it’s likely to continue growing
- [Jive](http://jivesoftware.com "Jive Software") was headquartered in Portland for quite a while, and their substantial regional office remains a fixture of the Portland startup scene
- Microsoft has a location in the Pearl District, which you notice if you travel north bound on 405
- Mozilla recently formalized its presence in town, moving out of coworking spaces [into a full-fledged office](https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/contact/spaces/portland/ "Mozilla Portland")
- [New Relic](http://newrelic.com "New Relic") has two floors in Big Pink and shows no signs of slowing, given its hiring
- [OpenSky](http://opensky.com "OpenSky") is currently working out of NedSpace
- [Phase2](http://www.phase2technology.com/ "Phase2") has an office in Portland, thanks to its Superstar Media acquisition
- [Roku](http://roku.com "Roku") used to have a small Portland office; not sure if its still here
- [Salesforce](http://salesforce.com "Salesforce") has set up a regional office [out in Hillsboro](http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/blog/2013/12/salesforce-hiring-70-in-hillsboro.html "Salesforce continues to staff up in Hillsboro")
- SweetSpot serves as [DexCom’s outpost in Portland](http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20120223006633/en/DexCom-Announces-Acquisition-SweetSpot-Diabetes-Care#.U_u4iLxkHQw "DexCom announces SweetSpot acquisition")
- [SquareSpace](http://squarespace.com "SquareSpace") has been [fairly effusive about its Portland build out](http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/blog/2014/08/why-squarespace-is-hiring-in-portland-after.html?page=all "Why Squarespace is hiring in Portland after shunning Seattle")
- [SurveyMonkey](http://surveymonkey.com "SurveyMonkey") used to be headquartered here, and it still has a regional office here
- [Walmart Labs](http://www.walmartlabs.com/ "Walmart Labs") had a presence in town that grew [through its Small Society acquisition](http://siliconflorist.com/2012/01/04/quintessential-portland-ios-shop-small-society-acquired-walmart-labs/ "Quintessential Portland iOS shop Small Society acquired by Walmart Labs")
- [WebMD](http://webmd.com "WebMD") has had an office here since the dotcom days
- Yahoo! is fairly quiet about its presence here, but its Hillsboro location is the third largest office for the company

Again, that’s just a smattering off the top of my head. [Sparked by the ebay news](http://www.geekwire.com/2014/ebays-portland-office-pushes-past-200-employees-kevin-hurst-named-general-manager/ "As eBay’s Portland office pushes past 200 employees, Kevin Hurst is named general manager"). I’m sure I’m missing others. Feel free to chime in, if only to make me feel stupid about the ones I’ve forgotten, spaced, or had no idea existed. If you make me feel like enough of an idiot, I’ll actually update the post.

I know that metropolitan areas are judged by the number of companies headquartered there. But maybe, just maybe, having a bunch of regional offices isn’t half bad. And maybe I’ll get to use “de facto” again, soon.
