# Gathering clouds: Portland's Cloudability announces first acquisition

It’s always a telling sign when Portland companies gather the wherewithal to begin making acquisitions. And that’s why I thought it was important to share that [Cloudability has just acquired the assets of their former competitor, CloudVertical](http://blog.cloudability.com/venturebeat-cloudability-buys-assets-of-onetime-competitor-cloudvertical-from-copper-io/ "VentureBeat: Cloudability buys assets of onetime competitor CloudVertical from Copper.io").

[According to VentureBeat](http://venturebeat.com/2015/03/17/cloudability-buys-assets-of-onetime-competitor-cloudvertical-from-copper-io/ "Cloudability buys assets of onetime competitor CloudVertical from Copper.io"):

> In 2012 and 2013, CloudVertical was one of Cloudability’s most prominent competitors. But the market has changed since then. Copper.io ended up buying CloudVertical.Cloudyn has become a more popular choice, while another player, Newvem, in 2013got acquired by Datapipe.

> Meanwhile, Cloudability has maintained a strong position; Ellis believes the startup manages around 15 percent of all Amazon cloud spending. Altogether, nearly 20 companies still sell cloud cost management services, but Ellis thinks that number will be shrinking soon.

“We’ve always had great respect for Cloudability,” says Copper.io CEO, Ed Byrne, in a press release. “I think it’s fair to say they are the undisputed leader in the space – and certainly the first mover with a complete product for enterprise users.”
