Barley, hops, and Google Fiber: Beer and Blog Portland offers Google wooing nectar Gigabit IPA tonight

What would you do to woo that Google Fiber group and make them think kindly of you? Well, if you’re Portland, Oregon, you brew a special beer. Duh. And then you call it Gigabit IPA.

Let’s say—hypothetically—that there’s the search engine for finding stuff on the Internet. For the sake of argument, let’s call it “Google.” Now let’s say that that search engine wants to bring a big super fast Internet connection to some lucky city. And I mean fast. Gigabit fast. Let’s just call it “Google Fiber.”

Every year about this time, you start to feel it. It’s drawing near. The largest geeky Web event of its kind. A sort of pilgrimage for the Web types. Where they all head down to, well, Texas of all places. To hang out, attend sessions, and socialize with other people of their ilk. That’s right. I said “ilk.”

Yep, it’s true. The time is drawing near for SXSW interactive, once again. And it promises to be bigger and better than ever. But who from Portland is making the journey down south? Portland’s Beer and Blog: Celebrating two years of beer-ing and blogging. But mostly beer-ing.

Because every Friday for the past two years the best place to meet and chat with the Portland tech community has been Beer and Blog, a gathering of bloggers helping bloggers over beers that has steadily grown to become the de facto happy hour for the Portland startup and tech scene.

[HTML1]Whenever I hear about tech types from out of town swinging by Portland, the first question out of my mouth is always—always—this: “Any chance you’re going to be here on Friday?”

Why? Because every Friday for the past two years the best place to meet and chat with the Portland tech community—as a community—has been Beer and Blog, a gathering with humble beginnings as an ad hoc support group of bloggers helping bloggers over beers that has steadily grown to become the de facto happy hour for the Portland startup and tech scene—whether you happen to blog or not.

And now, that little happy hour is all growed up in Internet years. Beer and Blog is celebrating its second anniversary today. Read More

Wednesday is the new Friday: Special pre-Thanksgiving unofficial Beer and Blog Portland

And that’s why fans of Beer and Blog Portland are holding a special non-Friday unofficial edition of the tech happy hour at Green Dragon this afternoon. To get you all prepared for your Thanksgiving festivities in style.

Stop what you’re doing and take a little gander around your office. Nobody is really doing any work. They’re either sitting their biding their time until they have to go hang out with their crazy uncles or trying to avoid the never-ending series of last minute runs to the grocery store.

It’s wasted time really.

But what if…? What if you could leave your place of employ for “a very important business meeting with local bloggers” later this afternoon? That might be nice, mightn’t it? Read More

Can’t wait for Beer and Blog this week? This bus will take you there on Thursday for free. The catch? It’s in Corvallis.

Most of the folks in the Portland Web scene have become all too familiar with a little Friday ritual called Beer and Blog. The event—which began with Justin Kistner helping a few other bloggers over beers—rapidly grew into the de facto happy hour for the Portland blogging and tech scene. So popular, in fact, that it spread to other cities.

But there were no rules saying you always had to go on a Friday. Or only go to Portland’s gathering, for that matter.

So this week, you’ve got the chance to go to Beer and Blog one day early—and get to experience Ignite Corvallis as a bonus. But how to get there? On this bus, my friend. Read More

Taptu times two: Sponsoring Beer and Blog and an iPhone focus group

And this Friday, we’ll have even more of a connection to Taptu. You see, they’re going to be hosting a focus group in which you might interested. Better yet? They’re going to buy you a beer at Beer and Blog.

While Taptu—makers of some impressive search functionality for the iPhone platform—may be headquartered across the big pond, their community manager, Jason Harris, lives right here in the Silicon Forest. So we’ve got a connection—I mean, besides that prevailing Portland love of all things iPhone.

And this Friday, we’ll have even more of a connection to Taptu. You see, they’re going to be hosting a focus group in which you might be interested. Better yet? They’re going to buy you a beer at Beer and Blog. And nothing makes friends quite like free beer. Read More

Rumor: WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg will be at Beer and Blog

[HTML2]Now you know how I struggle with the rumors. Generally, I don’t post anything until I’ve had the chance to check it out. I mean, just look at what all you crazy Portlanders did with that Dave Chappelle rumor.

But this one falls into the “fairly certain” category. And since I’m convinced that Portland loves WordPress and beer almost as much as it loves Chappelle I’m going with it: Matt Mullenweg—none other than the guy who created WordPress—will be at Beer and Blog, this Friday. Read More
