Depot was a new name to me. So the news of them raising a sizable Seed Round was a surprise. (Also pleasantly surprised to see they were Y Combinator alums.) But one thing that wasn’t surprising was the their focus — which I always phrase as “engineers building tools for other engineers” — a historically strong Portland startup sweetspot. (Honestly, not sure if they’re in Beaverton (according to Crunchbase) or Portland (according to their press release)). But whatever the case, this Portland-area startup has raised a $4.1 million Seed Round, bringing their total funding to nearly $6 million.
So what does Depot do…?
We believe that by accelerating the software build process, we can streamline the entire software development process, increasing developer happiness and unlocking new innovation.
We are building a next-generation, developer-first build platform that uses cloud compute to increase build speed and integrates with the existing ecosystem of container tools and services. Our goal is to eliminate compute bottlenecks, flatten learning curves, and empower developers to build faster.
“Builds are the linchpin of software development. All software must be built to run and test code locally,” said Kyle Galbraith, CEO and co-founder of Depot. “Likewise, developers need to build again in a continuous integration environment before testing and deploying to production. Depot accelerates builds in both environments to make the iteration cycle faster for developers everywhere.”
Depot stands out not just for its performance but also for its customer-centric approach. “It’s really fun talking to Depot customers, because they’re like, ‘Oh, I have this one small, really annoying thing with this provider,’ and we’re like, ‘You should 100% tell us, because we’ll probably go fix it, because we hate paper cuts,’” Galbraith shared with VentureBeat.
