Bluesky is having a moment

If you haven’t been tuned in, Bluesky is most definitely having a moment. When it first opened up to the public, a bunch of early adopter types were quick to pick up the platform — a semblance of Twitter originally led by Jack Dorsey that was designed to be a far more open and less commercial product — but its growth was fairly incremental.

Then a few other things happened.

Twitter was purchased and rebranded. LinkedIn picked up some weird and palpable social energy all of the sudden. Mastodon started to draw interest. Threads started to draw folks away for Twitter altogether. And yet, folks still kept using Twitter for some its real-time features that had not yet been replicated anywhere else.

But now, with the recent elections, folks are leaving Twitter in droves. And looking for something else. That feels like Twitter and has more Twitter-esque features.

And Bluesky definitely seems way more familiar to the Twitter faithful than anything else. So it’s growing like crazy.

Bluesky now has over 20M people!! 🎉 We've been adding over a million users per day for the last few days. To celebrate, here are 20 fun facts about Bluesky:

And in many ways, it reminds me of the early days of Twitter. Where I found a bunch of peers from the Portland startup community. And conversations started to happen. And connections were made.

So, just like I used to do with Twitter back in the day, I thought it might be helpful to highlight some stuff on Bluesky that might be of interest. Specifically in the form of Starter Packs, a Bluesky concept similar to lists that help you jump start your Bluesky experience with a whole bunch of people to follow at once.

Here are some I’d recommend for a Portland startup type:

Portland OR Feeds Feeds by me: PDX Posts (General): bsky.app/profile/did:… PDX Skeet Storm Team (weather, including Oregon): bsky.app/profile/did:… Pickathon (Music festival, seasonal): bsky.app/profile/did:… Others: PDX (General): bsky.app/profile/did:… PDX Bikes: bsky.app/profile/did:…
