Silicon Florist links arrangement for October 29, 2026

Here’s a roundup of interesting startup links I came across today:

Portland biotech startup Caravel Bio lands $1.2 million grant, works to develop cheaper protein testing – oregonlive.com

Nicks founded Caravel in 2022. The system he developed uses tiny droplets of liquid to make and test proteins, while bacterial spores help track the results. Caravel then uses that information to train AI to predict which versions are most likely to work.

The Sports Bra sets opening date for St. Louis sports bar – Portland Business Journal

A sports bar dedicated to women’s sports has set the opening date for its St. Louis location. The Sports Bra, the Portland.-based sports bar concept, will open Friday, Nov. 13, in downtown Maplewood. The restaurant and bar will occupy the former 7344 Manchester Road home of restaurant Boogaloo, which closed in 2024 after more than two decades in business.

VertueLab names Oregon entrepreneur new executive director – Portland Business Journal

“Stepping into this position means that I get to lead building the type of programs I wish I had or that could have helped me in my entrepreneurship journey years back around commercializing a product,” said Ochoa, who founded the company Dorsum. “Now I can use my entrepreneurship experience to help design and build programs for others entering the commercialization phase.”

Midwest Startups Built America from the Basement; Now the Heartland Fixes Entrepreneurship

State lines are where taxes get collected, and they are a terrible unit for understanding startups. Truly and very harshly, it’s as crappy a measure as comparing cities letting cities pretend they’re the next big thing. Kansas City is literally split between two states with separate angel tax credit programs. A founder on one side of State Line Road qualifies for incentives the founder across the street cannot touch.

DoorDash to Acquire Instacart to Help Local Stores Win

DoorDash, Inc. (NASDAQ: DASH) and Maplebear Inc. (d.b.a. Instacart, NASDAQ: CART) today announced a definitive agreement under which DoorDash will acquire Instacart for a total value of $65.00 for each Instacart share, or an equity value of approximately $17 billion. The aggregate transaction consideration will be at least 75% cash, with Instacart stockholders able to elect cash, DoorDash stock, or a combination of both, subject to proration so that DoorDash stock does not exceed 25% of the aggregate consideration. Instacart’s board of directors has unanimously approved the agreement.

(2019) A unicorn among us: Vacasa’s latest round makes it a Portland startup rarity

The big news around the Portland startup community today — and likely for some time to follow — surrounded the latest round of funding for Vacasa. Why? Because the size of the round — at $319 million — was unusual. And the valuation for that round catapulted the company into unicorn territory.

Why Sam Altman is against a single superintelligence

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, joins John to break down how models uncovered critical PHP vulnerabilities, why test-time compute unlocks massive agent swarms, and OpenAI’s internal experiments proving complex math problems like Navier-Stokes. He also shares why sandboxing superhuman models is an unsolved safety dilemma, how robotics will scale future gigawatt data centers, and why businesses must adapt as personal agents replace traditional web forms and mobile apps.

Entrepreneurs’ Organization survey uncovers Portland concerns – Portland Business Journal

Among the key results, 27% of EO members cited economic uncertainty and market conditions as “their biggest impediment to growth” and a concern that “keeps them up at night.” Another 16% said talent, hiring and retention is their biggest challenge, followed “Portland-specific challenges” (13%), rising costs and taxes (10%), political and federal policy (10%) and tariffs and trade policy (7%).

Revisit Claes Oldenburg’s Seminal ‘Six Themes’ 50 Years After Its Debut — Colossal

Claes Oldenburg’s large-scale installations are iconic, typically taking everyday items and tools and ramping them up to a monumental size. Perhaps the most famous, “Spoonbridge and Cherry” (1988), was made in collaboration with his wife and fellow artist Coosje van Bruggen and has pride of place over a pond in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. At the entrance of the Denver Art Museum, “Big Sweep” (2006) depicts a broom whisking crumpled paper into a dust pan. And in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., “Typewriter Eraser, Scale X” (1998-99) depicts a giant vintage eraser with a small attached brush used to manually edit typewritten texts.

The future of the firm | OpenAI

We believe the hybrid firm is conceptually important because productive adoption of AI isn’t instantaneous. When the models only do a subset of tasks, adoption may be easiest by ground-level employees familiar with the work. Once the models perform broad functions end-to-end, higher-ups can use them directly. In our view, more capable AI is more adoptable: firms must learn technologies, but labor learns the firm and can onboard itself.

The October inflection point for vibe game development

I’ve written before about how November 2025 was an inflection point for coding agents—the point where Opus 4.5 and GPT-5.1 crossed a tipping point that meant their respective coding agents became reliable daily drivers for software engineers. I think we’ve reached a new inflection point in October 2026, and this time it’s for vibe coding computer games.

Chasing the Karpathy Peak (and Falling Off Slop Cliff)

You go faster and faster. 1 experiment per day turns into 2, then 5, then 10. You can’t type fast enough so you start using voice mode. You can feel it. Karpathy Peak is right ahead. You’re being so productive. It feels so good.

The Brutal Harvard Class That Suddenly Everyone Wants to Take – WSJ

Those who see the humanities, heavy coursework and value of a Harvard education as gravely imperiled can take heart in the phenomenon that is Humanities 10.
