Meet DesignScene, a new “real-time inspiration” app that’s designed to provide iPad users with a bevy of interesting imagery. All delivered by a pre-selected group of design sites.

With Portland’s growing mobile development scene, I get a lot of chances to write up iPhone apps that work equally well on an iPad. But it’s not often that I get to talk about a pure iPad app.

Meet DesignScene, a new “real-time inspiration” app that’s designed to provide iPad users with a bevy of interesting imagery. All delivered by a pre-selected group of design sites.

Designed to appeal to the graphic design crowd, DesignScene is a fire hose of beautiful, interesting, and constantly updated imagery that could serve as inspiration for practically anyone.

We graphic designers are visual creatures. We get inspired by the world around us—the media we consume, the objects we desire, the designs we wish we had created ourselves. DesignScene is a real-time inspiration app for graphic designers drawing from myriad relevant sources, from art to architecture, illustration to fashion, photography to typography.

Flick through different selections. Read associated stories. Share the information with your friends. All from the comfort of your iPad.

If the metrics on their download link are any indication, the makers of design scene—Lunar/Theory—may have a hit on their hands. Gizmodo seems to like DesignScene, too.

Apps for consuming web content on the iPad have largely shaken down into two categories: dedicated apps for individual sites and RSS readers populated with a users’ selected feeds. DesignScene is something else entirely: a prepackaged bundle of all-things design.

The other thing—and perhaps most interesting to me—is that now that they’ve built this platform? I can totally see them releasing apps focused on other verticals. What about a photography app? Or a car lover app? Or a gadget app? There are all kinds of directions they could take this. And that could make for a very interesting suite of apps.

DesignScene is available in the App Store for $3.99. And, as I mentioned above, it only runs on the iPad.
