Now, we all know the big names who have regional offices here. Well, the big name: Intel, whose campuses in Hillsboro contain the largest group of Intel employees, anywhere. And there’s HP and IBM and Synopsys. But a growing number of startup companies are setting up regional offices here, as well. And it shows no signs of slowing.
You already knew it was happening. Just glancing at the Silicon Florist Job Board or the Portland Startups Switchboard sort of gives it away. And today, we learned that ebay was expanding its Portland presence.
So who all in the tech and startup scene has a regional office here? Well, let’s see. Off the top of my head…
- If rumors are to be believed, Airbnb already has 100 employees in its Portland offices
- AppNexus is standing up an office
- Drupal shop Acquia has space here
- Aruba Networks has a Portland office through its Meridian acquisition
- BBVA has a Portland footprint here through its Simple acquisition
- Esri has a Portland office through its Geoloqi acquisition
- Google has folks here for a while; as Google Fiber goes in, it’s likely to continue growing
- Jive was headquartered in Portland for quite a while, and their substantial regional office remains a fixture of the Portland startup scene
- Microsoft has a location in the Pearl District, which you notice if you travel north bound on 405
- Mozilla recently formalized its presence in town, moving out of coworking spaces into a full-fledged office
- New Relic has two floors in Big Pink and shows no signs of slowing, given its hiring
- OpenSky is currently working out of NedSpace
- Phase2 has an office in Portland, thanks to its Superstar Media acquisition
- Roku used to have a small Portland office; not sure if its still here
- Salesforce has set up a regional office out in Hillsboro
- SweetSpot serves as DexCom’s outpost in Portland
- SquareSpace has been fairly effusive about its Portland build out
- SurveyMonkey used to be headquartered here, and it still has a regional office here
- Walmart Labs had a presence in town that grew through its Small Society acquisition
- WebMD has had an office here since the dotcom days
- Yahoo! is fairly quiet about its presence here, but its Hillsboro location is the third largest office for the company
Again, that’s just a smattering off the top of my head. Sparked by the ebay news. I’m sure I’m missing others. Feel free to chime in, if only to make me feel stupid about the ones I’ve forgotten, spaced, or had no idea existed. If you make me feel like enough of an idiot, I’ll actually update the post.
I know that metropolitan areas are judged by the number of companies headquartered there. But maybe, just maybe, having a bunch of regional offices isn’t half bad. And maybe I’ll get to use “de facto” again, soon.
