Portland startup A Kids Co sells A Kids Book About series to DK

The Portland startup that began with a book for kids about racism and then expanded to a variety of titles about subjects that spark conversations between parents and kids — and a variety of media platforms, as well — has sold that line of books to DK. A Kids Co founder Jelani Memory shared the news in a LinkedIn update.

This is truly a dream come true, as DK is the world’s leading non-fiction children’s publisher, having built an iconic brand across the last 50 years explaining big ideas to kids. Truly, I couldn’t think of a better home for the A Kids Book About series.

My new role will be as VP & Publisher at DK, continuing to grow the series and tell the most important stories kids ever hear!

And guess what?! A Kids Co. isn’t going anywhere. Not only will the A Kids Co. continue to produce new podcasts, operate the direct to consumer business, seek brand partnerships outside of books, and pursue additional multi-media opportunities, but I’ll get to stay along for the ride in my new role there as Founder & Executive Chair.

“I’m delighted to welcome Jelani, a truly inspirational and creative publisher, to the DK family,” said Paul Kelly, chief executive of DK. “A Kids Book About has found the perfect home in DK — both companies are mission-driven innovators, with a strong belief in sharing knowledge and education through engaging and accessible ways.”

“When we talk about books moving the world forward, Jelani really lives it, by connecting inspirational people with children to introduce them to challenging, empowering and important topics. I couldn’t think of a better team to establish DK’s first US-based children’s creative team.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
