Putting the AI Genie back in the bottle

Portland startup Genie — which marked a third time at Y Combinator for cofounder and CEO Darius Monsef — has officially had product in market long enough to gain a thorough understanding of user and buyer behavior. That’s the good news. The bad news…? There doesn’t appear to be a clear path forward without compromising the ethos of the company. So they’re shutting down the product — while seeking new opportunities for the team.

Darius shared the following on LinkedIn:

It was so awesome to see so many kids make a new friend in Genie, but ultimately the Genieverse is going offline. While we had enthusiastic usage from kids, when it came down to monetization; parents aren’t ready to spend on AI for their kids in a way we feel good about.

A real philosophical challenge we had building in the kids edutainment space was that when we’re competing for kids attention… we know we’re unwilling to do the things (addictive gamification, dark patterns, etc.) others will do to win. There are great companies that have figured out a good way to ride that balance of this like Zigazoo, and I hope more companies that are rooted in the well being and safety of kids succeed.

We believe AI agents will become part of our everyday life, and that kids deserve one that prioritizes their wellbeing… We may have been a little too early to market for something like this, but we hope the others building in this space find great success.
