Here’s a roundup of interesting startup links I came across today:
The Hardware, Economics, and Security Challenges of Long-Context AI — Tellagence | by Nitin Mayande | Oct, 2026 | Medium
Longer context comes with real hardware costs, higher inference bills, latency challenges, and — perhaps surprisingly — new accuracy and security problems. The key question is no longer “How much context can we fit?” but rather “How much context do we actually need, and how can we represent it efficiently and safely?”

AI models may be capable of self-replicating without access to a datacenter
Our experiments suggest that small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial internet-of-things (IoT) devices, like smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes. A replicator like this would be challenging to shut down, since there’s no centralized point to shut off—though it may be slow (with a doubling time of days). Unlike non-AI malware, it could also figure out unfamiliar devices on its own. In our evaluations, a 9B model got inference running on 8 of the 9 hardware types we tested.
Introducing Apple Home Collection
Apple today announced Apple Home Collection, a new lineup of smart home accessories — including indoor and outdoor cameras, thermostats, temperature sensors, and a video doorbell and door lock — designed in collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric.1 These new accessories are simple to set up starting with one tap with iPhone, and everything is managed through the Apple Home app — no separate app or account required. Each accessory is encrypted end-to-end in Apple Home, so only users and the people they choose can access their home data.
Workday to Acquire C1.ai
Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ: WDAY), the trusted agentic platform for HR, finance, and IT, today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire C1.ai, a leading agentic identity platform for people and agents. C1.ai connects to the systems a business runs on—from email and CRM to code repositories, finance systems, and cloud infrastructure—giving each person and agent the right access at the right time, and removing it the moment it’s no longer needed.
AI Is a Tool. Using It Well Takes Skill. – yyhh.org
An LLM’s unpredictability is a meaningful limitation. But predictability, reliability, simplicity, and bounded function are qualities by which we evaluate tools, not prerequisites for membership in the category. A tool does not stop being a tool because it is difficult to control or easy to misuse.
(2009) Angels in Oregon: The definitive guide to early stage investment opportunities for both startups and potential investors
[Editor: John Sechrest has put together what is, arguably, the most comprehensive collection of Oregon Angel events and organizations in existence. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to publish this guest post.]
Business and Labor Groups Launch Political Committee to Back Moderates Running for County Chair and City Council
The committee, called Unity PAC, says on its website that its members include the Portland Police Association, the Portland Fire Fighters’ Association, the Northwest Oregon Labor Council (which encompasses more than 100 individual unions), the Columbia Pacific Building Trades, and United for Portland, which is the political arm of the Portland Metro Chamber.
The Expensive-Loop Problem — LessWrong
LLMs are amazing at tasks where they have tight and legible feedback loops. Domains where experiments are quick, deterministic and cheap. I will call these domains “cheap-loop” domains.
Raising money for Matthew Choi Farmers Market grant, samn opens – Portland Business Journal

Code Boom. Talent Bust
There’s a strange disconnect happening right now between what people believe AI is doing to software development and what’s actually happening in the industry. The prevailing narrative is that AI is going to dramatically reduce our need for software developers, and that as the tools become more capable, companies will need fewer engineers to get the same amount of work done.
Trust Is a Founder’s Secret Weapon
When founders build trust with their teams, people are willing to go the extra mile. When they build trust with investors, conversations become easier and more productive. When they build trust with customers, loyalty follows. The important thing about trust is that it is rarely built through one big moment. It is built through small actions repeated over time.
How to tell if a startup has a moat – by Dan Hockenmaier
Moats! Does anyone have one anymore? As AI makes it easy to build anything, this is one of the biggest questions on people’s minds right now. Especially people trying to decide where to work.
Amazon has over 1 million robot workers. What’s next for human employees? – Ars Technica
No organization in the world operates more robots than Amazon. The company already has more than 1 million robots working in warehouses around the clock to make tens of millions of same-day and one-day package deliveries happen on a daily basis—and Amazon is poised to significantly grow that robotic fleet in the coming years as it establishes new factories to churn out increasingly more capable robot workers.
Is ‘Attention’ the Essence of Intelligence? | Quanta Magazine
Translation is not as simple as swapping each English word for a French one. Languages have different grammatical structures and are riddled with idioms and connotations, all of which had long stymied attempts to automate the process. You can’t simply implement rules of translation because there are none. But neural networks seemed promising because they learn by example. They can be trained on huge databases of paired English and French sentences to, eventually, absorb the quasi-rules, exceptions, and subtleties.
Coding Alone
Over the last few years, the world has rapidly moved from open-source software being produced and maintained by online communities, to software projects being built and maintained in isolation. By single developers, with ever-decreasing input from others. AI coding tools are now dramatically accelerating movement away from code as a collective endeavour to “coding alone”. I conclude by describing how such progression need not be considered inevitable. Every step has reflected the collective influence of countless individual human decisions. We can still decide to help re-activate open-source software communities, including through using AI coding tools in ways that help retain community.
