Here’s a roundup of interesting startup links I came across today:
What Makes a Compelling Investment Thesis? — Oregon Venture Fund
As early-stage venture investors, often when evaluating a company there is hardly any revenue to underwrite, no retention metrics, and little data to base decisions on. Oftentimes, there is a team going after an opportunity and it is up to us to make an argument for why we believe that there is a clear, falsifiable case for why that very company could become large relatively quickly, why this is the time for that to happen, and why this is the team to pull it off. That argument is our thesis.

(2011) Boot-y call: Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) lands grant to build startup accelerator “boot camps” statewide
If you’re in the tech scene, you’re well aware of the incubator and accelerator renaissance going on right now. It seems like every day a new organization arises to ensure startups have more resources to move faster and further than they would on their own. But that’s not always happening in your backyard.
An apology | Elevation Lab
We launched an AirTag silencing tool recently. We have always made products we want for ourselves, and this was no different – we wanted it for AirTags on our bikes. (Some of us here have bikes more valuable than our cars.)

October 2026 Open Letter from the Scientific Community on AI and Cybersecurity
We, the undersigned scientists, contend that both more AI safety research and more emphasis on containment technologies and procedures are needed. In the short term, strong sandboxing mechanisms including airgapping (disconnecting from the internet) should be used to provide high-assurance containment of cyber-capable AI models. For all internet-connected AI models, the range of model actions permitted by a containment system needs to be balanced with our currently limited ability to predict that the model’s actions will not result in a security failure (e.g., due to misaligned goals). To learn from future mistakes—in which appropriate balance is not achieved and incidents occur—we need greater sharing of information and transparency about containment failures moving forward. Understanding how to achieve this balance is a significant challenge and will require collaboration between the AI and security communities.

We’re hiring because you still need humans in many parts of the building loop. Yes, building is easier, but that just makes me want to build more things. Serve more customers. Build the best product they’ve ever used.
The Death of Venture Capital’s Short Kings · Kyle Harrison
For years, these two firms were the short kings of venture capital. Benchmark and USV weren’t small because nobody would give them money; LPs were practically begging them to take more. They were small on purpose, and proud of it. But now the crowns are coming off.
Claude, don’t touch my lump – by Adam Mastroianni
If you take this kind of story seriously, though, shouldn’t unemployment have been steadily increasing since, say the Industrial Revolution? Shouldn’t we now be at 100% unemployment, or at least well on our way there? Why instead is the unemployment rate basically where it was 80 years ago?
Silicon Valley, Seen from Beijing – Crossing the River
In August, Meng Xing drove south from SFO down the 101 and read the billboards — Silicon Valley’s most honest weathervane. Two years ago they were all SaaS; this year they are wall-to-wall AI, with Kimi now buying San Francisco billboards and Codex spending heavily to battle Claude Code. Nothing suggests AI is slowing down. What startled him was something else: judgments he’d never heard before, coming from the most central people.
