Key startup policy debates to watch in lame duck, new Congress
Democrats’ major victories in Tuesday’s midterm elections could reshape policy debates affecting nearly every corner of the startup ecosystem, from access to capital and talent, to AI, online safety, trade, and more. Voters handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress, setting the stage for significant changes in Washington—and governing trifectas in multiple states, setting the stage for supercharged state policymaking. The scale of the victories could influence what lawmakers pursue during the remaining weeks of the current Congress, while bringing increased oversight of the administration and the tech industry when the next Congress takes office in January.
The Will of the People – by Charlie Gilkey
What a week in US politics. I’ve been thinking and feeling about it all week and I’m as relieved as I am worried. I’m reckoning with a protective bitterness I’ve had since the end of 2024 and I think it’s going to take some time to shake it.

Focus on Finding Role Models, Not Mentors | by Hunter Walk | Nov, 2026 | Medium
True mentorship is powerful but it’s become self-proclaimed, over-used and diluted to the point where, in many situations, it’s basically value signaling and social proof instead of a true commitment. It particularly rankles me when someone unilaterally says they’re somebody else’s mentor. That’s like insisting you’re good at sex — only the *other* person should be able to credit you with that skill.

Meet *sshole, the vulnerability that lets hackers SSH into Linux devices – Ars Technica
The vulnerability exists in the interaction between OpenSSH, the code library implementing SSH connections, and musl, a lightweight alternative to the libc library that, unlike most other Linux distributions, is used in Alpine. Further, OpenSSH using musl (pronounced muscle) must not use PAM (pluggable authentication modules), a framework that handles user authentication and account-access checks. Alpine is a lightweight, widely used Linux distribution. Other platforms may be affected if they use the same configurations.
