Building an AI startup…? Oregon launches a new AI startup accelerator to help

If you’ve ever talked to me about startup accelerators, you know that my current take is that they need to have a focus. The “generic startups accelerator” game is over. Today’s startup accelerators need to pick an area of expertise to stand out in the crowd. Like the Oregon UAS Accelerator. And now, the Oregon AI Accelerator.

A coalition of Oregon’s top innovation and academic institutions, today announced the launch of the Oregon AI Accelerator, a first-of-its-kind statewide initiative designed to support early-stage founders building transformative, AI-first companies.

Backed by seed funding from Google, and supported by the Metro Regional Innovation Hub, Portland State University, Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon State University, the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network, the Technology Association of Oregon, and TiE Oregon, the Accelerator will launch its inaugural pilot in February 2026.

“This program is much bigger than accelerating startups—it’s about helping Oregon small businesses compete and grow in the age of AI,” said Katy Bowman, manager of Google’s community development and engagement program. “By investing in entrepreneurs and connecting them to resources statewide, we’re helping ensure Oregon remains a place where innovation drives broad economic opportunity.”

Serial entrepreneur Jack Phan will serve as the executive director:

Applications for the accelerator program open today and will remain open through December 15, 2025. The initial cohort will run from early February through mid May 2026. Startups for anywhere may apply, but Oregon startups will be given special consideration. The initial cohort will be hybrid.

Program offerings include mentorship, workspace, and other resources, plus a demo day. Funding — often a part of startup accelerator programs — does not appear to be part of this offering. According to the Portland Business Journal, “Participants will be able to compete for up to $50,000 in non-dilutive grants.” There doesn’t appear to be tuition or equity required from founders, either.
