This is why I don’t want to be a journalist. Soooooooo… the Beneficial Ownership Information Reporting that required US startups to file with the Feds about who owned what in businesses of 20 people or less has been quite the back and forth. First it was mandatory. Then it was optional. Then it was mandatory. Then, this happened:

A lot can happen in a year. Which is why I always like taking the opportunity to look back, review the stories of the year, and see which of those stories — if any — seem to resonate with folks. I’ve usually just done that with the blog. But this year, I’m also going to take a gander at what was popular on the YouTube channel, the podcast, and the newsletter. Let’s get into it…

First there was the Beneficial Ownership Information Reporting (BOIR) deadline of January 1, 2025. Then there was a lawsuit that made it optional. Then that ruling was appealed. And the appeal was successful. So now, BOIR is mandatory again. And it’s due January 13, 2025.

With the Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA) celebrating 40 years of existence, outgoing CEO Michael Schutzler took the opportunity to capture his perspective on the Washington technology community and how the last 40 years has formed — and informed — the technology that Washington tech community we know today.

Tis the season. For starting the year off on the right foot. The Portland startup community is no different.
