City of Portland: Calling all Androids! Well, at least these specific models of Android devices.

The City of Portland is ready to test an app for the open source Android operating system. Got an Android device? Want to help the City test its app? Right this way.

[HTML1]Remember back when the City of Portland launched an iPhone app? Remember one of the first questions out of the gates? That’s right. When was the City going to offer apps on other platforms?

Well, the City of Portland has been working on those other platforms and devices. And now, they’re ready to test an app for the open source Android operating system. (Or maybe not so “open.”) Got an Android device? Want to help the City test its app? Right this way.

What’s that? What’s Android? Well, it’s an open source operating system for mobile devices. And it’s backed by Google. Some folks say that it’s going to be the dominant operating system in mobile devices.

So what devices is the City of Portland looking to test? Well, any one of the following devices running OS v2.1 [update] or OS v2.2.

  • LG Ally
  • HTC EVO 4G
  • Motorola Droid X
  • Google Nexus One
  • Samsung Epic 4G
  • Samsung Fascinate
  • Samsung Vibrant
  • T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide

Also important to note:

We’ve already tested a number of phones, including the Motorola Droid, Motorola Droid 2, HTC Droid Incredible, Samsung Captivate, but if folks have any other Droid phone running OS v2.1 or later, we’d be interested in testing on theirs as well.

The City would like 12-15 folks to participate. Interested? Drop Rick Nixon, who is heading up the initiative, an email. Or maybe swing by Portland Lunch 2.0 at City Hall tomorrow to chat about Android app development.

Sigh. It’s so nice to see Portland—from municipal entities through individual developers—continue to become the de facto hub for all things mobile and open source.

  3. Thanks, Rick. I just sent him an email.

  4. I’ve really been looking forward to this app. Sent Rick an email. Thanks for the heads up!

  5. Any of the above devices running OS v2.1 or v.2.2, please.

    Thanks!
