OpenHack: Actually surprised I'm getting to introduce this to Portland hackers

Usually, I’m a little late to the party. I mean, when I see folks talking about all of the cities on this latest hacking idea, I assume Portland is already participating. And when it’s an open hacking thing? I mean, c’mon. Portland is probably leading the charge, right? Heck, we probably even organized it.

And I’m not even going to go into the whole “Portland startups on Github” stuff.

So imagine my surprise when I happened upon OpenHack and Portland was nowhere to be found.

That’s right.

Atlanta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Birmingham, AL; Boston, MA; Buffalo, NY; Chicago, IL; Columbia, SC; Columbus, OH; Fort Wayne, IN; Green Bay, WI; Iowa City, IA; Jersey City, NJ; Miami, FL; New York City, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; Providence, RI; Toronto, ON; and Windsor, ON. But still no Portland, OR. Sad trombone.

So what is OpenHack thing anyway? Well, “OpenHack is a meetup with a simple purpose: Code together, on anything.”

Sounds pretty Portlandy, right? So maybe we should get on it.

And by “we” I mean people who actually have coding chops and who find this a good idea.

For more information, visit OpenHack or follow @openhack on Twitter.

  1. I don’t see why not. On second thought, I say we have multiple Portland listings 😉

  2. Can we just declare one of NoPoCoNi, SePoCoNi, or the PDX Weekly Hackathon to be a chapter of this thing? Those are three weekly events with exactly the purpose of “code together, on anything”.
