Minutes from “Dashboards” at Beer and Blog

From Beer and Blog organizer, Justin Kistner: “Yesterday’s session on dashboards was by far the best beer and blog meet up yet! We had our largest turnout and half of them were fresh faces. I’ve had people tell me that the Friday time doesn’t work for them, so I think we’re going to continue to have Sunday meet ups once a month. I think it will be an every 3 weeks deal, but keep an eye on our calendar to the right or Upcoming for exact dates.”

Jive gets a new logo

According to Sam Lawrence, Jive’s CMO, “Jive’s corporate logo. The ‘Bullhorn’ didn’t represent collaboration as much as it did an individual voice. And it certainly didn’t match the new product logos and corporate identity…. So, today we begin the long, arduous process of switching out the “old bully” with our new mark. We’ve started with our website and will be fully transitioned over the next couple of months. We’re super happy with Jive’s new logo and hope you like it, too. Even though it’s brand new, we already feel like it perfectly reflects who we are as a company.”

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! Beer and Blog

For one week only, Beer and Blog, the weekly knowledge sharing get-together for Portland bloggers, will be held on Sunday from 2-4 at the eastside Lucky Lab. (Which is a little late for me to tell you, if you tried to attend on Friday and are reading this on Saturday.) This week? Using dashboards for tracking and managing information.

Hyperlocal News

Brooks Jordan on getting hyperlocal in your focus. An interesting read. And the underlying reasoning behind the blog you happen to be reading right now.

NetworthIQ: The median balance sheet

The following is the initial findings of the data for all “current users” in the US. Nothing too interesting yet, but it’s a start. I have a hunch this is mainly because our user base skews to the under 30 crowd. It will get more interesting as it’s broken out by the demographic categories and presented as part of the comparison report feature.

Metroblogging Portland: OLPC meetup

Dieselboi of Metroblogging Portland describes his encounter with the “One Laptop Per Child” machine: “The OLPC is a great little machine. I was able to play with one for a few minutes. It comes with two antennae – one for wireless 802.11 and the other or a radio network specific to the OLPC. It has a mapping utility that shows where other OLPCs are, wifi hotspots and other items on the network. The radio antenna can also be used as a bridge/repeater to extend the mesh network. It even had PONG!”

Jason Grigsby on the Mobile Web: Where are we Going?

One of Grigsby’s major points was that the mobile web space is currently in a situation similar to that of the general web in the mid 90’s. Standards are absent. Most people aren’t yet on the platform, but it’s quickly growing. There are many browsers. Each browser renders content differently. Nobody is sure who will “win” the browser wars. Nobody knows the direction the mobile web will take.

Metafluence: Twitter reply sniffer

Metafluence’s Justin Kistner can’t ignore us on Twitter anymore. Well, he still can, I guess. But now he has less of an excuse. His Twitter reply sniffer helps you keep track of replies from people you don’t follow. (If that last sentence made absolutely no sense, that’s a good sign that you should get on Twitter.)

WebMD’s Acquisition By Parent May Not Occur; Outlook Lower on Yahoo Fears | paidContent.org

Granted, WebMD is not a startup. But its behavior affects the startup community. With a substantial presence in the Portland tech community, WebMD has a number of former employees starting and joining startups in the Portland area.

WebMD (NSDQ: WBMD), the online health information service, may not be sold back to its parent firm HLTH Corp, due to a “negotiation stalemate”, according to the companies. HLTH owns about 84 percent of WebMD. The two companies indicated in November last year that this transaction would occur, to give its shareholders more say in the WebMD business.

Local Portland Tech Start-up Coverage

A little egosurfing here. As part of my effort to spread the word about all you Portland-area startups that I love so dearly, I’ve been lucky enough to pick up a writing gig for another Portland-focused pub. I’m honored to be the first U.S. writer for this Canadian blog.

Allen Stern Places Bet on Portland, Loses

Center Networks hosted Rick Turoczy Wednesday and asked him to dish about his man-crush on the Silicon Forest. Portland’s one-day moment in the sun was spectacularly dashed on Thursday, when the Gray Lady brought truthiness back into vogue with the article Seattle Taps Its Inner Silicon Valley. Tech hasn’t seen this kind of MSM smackdown since Walt Mossberg’s early-onset senility in 2005 when he suggested that Apple wasn’t the True Faith Incarnate.
