Alex Williams has offered that the Portland Metblog meetup, this Wednesday at the Green Dragon, would be the perfect place to toast former Metblogger Russell Shaw, whom we lost, last weekend:

Bloggers, everyone – come on out Wed. night to the Metblog party at the Green Dragon and raise a pint with me to good ol’ Russell Shaw. I’ll be there to remember my good friend and Metblog colleague who passed away last weekend. Let’s share a laugh and a story about the hardest working blogger in the business. Russ and I both blogged for Metblog so it will be good to see some friends and familiar faces. Hope to see you there.

Meet: Portland Metroblogs monthly get-together

While I’m totally abusing their Creative Commons license for professional use (I’m willing to withstand Banana Lee Fishbones wrath), I thought it important to mention that the Portland Metroblogs team is hosting a meet-up on Wednesday:

Metblogs will order some food for everyone, but drinks are on you (or McAngrypants if you compliment his slacks.) The Chesterfield does offer great Happy Hour specials until 7pm.

This is a great opportunity to meet with the folks who run one of the most popular blogs in Portland, Metroblogging Portland.

And if you can’t make it? No worries. We’ll find you another cool opportunity to meet the who’s who of the Portland Web, blogging, and geek community (although, the Metroblogging Portland folks are exceptionally cool).

Meet: Portland Web Innovators discuss mobile Web, February 13

Portland Web Innovators has announced the topic of their February meeting: Mobile Web. And who better to speak on the subject than local mobile expert Jason Grigsby of Cloud Four?

Grigsby is one of those folks who is mildly excited by the prospects of the mobile Web. In his own words, “It isn’t possible to ignore the mobile Web any longer. So much opportunity for new discovery, new applications, and ways to make people’s lives better.” And his enthusiasm about the subject is infectious.

Feeling a little light on holiday cheer and can’t quite wait until New Year’s Eve? You’re in luck. Because, filled with the holiday spirit, some folks have thrown together a spur-of-the-moment holiday event for all Portland-area geeks.

Join the gathering December 29 at from 6:17 until 10:03 at the McMenamins Blue Moon in Northwest Portland.

What constitutes a “geek”?

By “geek” I mean you have an iPhone or you Twitter or you attended (or plan to attend) an Ignite Portland or have a Facebook account or you’ve heard of the “Richter Scales” or even if you’re a geek and just visiting family (you guys know who you are) then you’re invited.

Meet: BarCamp Portland informal meetup tonight

The regular—yet informal—BarCamp Portland meetup will be held tonight at 5:30. Jive Software will host the event.

The Portland meetups are intended to be a little less intense and more frequent than a full BarCamp Portland event. The intent is to get a group of cool people interested in technology together to chat over drinks on the fourth Thursday of every month. Anyone working in high-tech is welcome to attend.

South of the Forest: Meet Oregon Investment Fund in Medford

Granted, Medford, Oregon, is more “real forest” than “Silicon Forest.” But this event seemed to be right in line with the entrepreneurial spirit of the Silicon Florist, so I thought I’d pass it along. (Besides, I’m always hoping that a few of you Rose City startups can get a slice of that $100 million of love that is the Oregon Investment Fund (OIF).)

On November 14, CreditSuisse, managers of the OIF, will be hosting “Real-world Case Studies of Emerging Companies Searching for Funding.”

Sure, Medford’s a bit of a haul. But far be it from me to keep you from a road trip.

What’s the Oregon Investment Fund? I’m glad you asked. You see, in July 2003, the Oregon State Legislature approved a mandate for the Oregon Investment Council (“OIC”) to design and implement a US$100 million program that encourages the growth of small businesses within the state of Oregon. To accomplish this mandate, the OIC chose to develop a fund of funds, the Oregon Investment Fund. This fund, which is capitalized by funds from the OIC, has committed capital to private equity and venture capital funds that in turn invest in companies located primarily in the state of Oregon, as well as the Pacific Northwest region.
