Embedding video in WordPress will get easier, thanks to Portland’s Viper007Bond

Like embedding video. As anyone who has ever tried to embed a video in a WordPress blog post can tell you. They’ve likely lost a few clumps of hair in the process.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love the WordPress. Nothing has ever made my blogging life easier than its open source goodness. But all that love aside, it does have a few blemishes.

Like embedding video. As anyone who has ever tried to embed a video in a WordPress blog post can tell you. They’ve likely lost a few clumps of hair in the process.

If only it could be easier. If only.

Well, thanks to Portland-based Alex “Viper007Bond” it will be.

You see, Viper007Bond just contributed code to WordPress core that will vastly simplify embedding remote content. That means videos as well as other heretofore hard to embed content.

This feature can be used to embed literally any type of content from any website that supports embedding its content. If the site supports oEmbed and has a discovery tag to their oEmbed provider URL in <head> the of their pages, then you’re good to go — you can embed their content without doing anything extra.

Now, don’t get too excited. It’s still early and the code is still in alpha but…

What’s that? You’re willing to try it in alpha? Alright you crazy kids. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.

If you’re into testing alpha code and would like to try it out, just checkout a copy of the WordPress trunk via SVN. You can also just wait until later this month for when the more stable WordPress 2.9 beta is planned to be released.

You can get the full instructions on using the code in Viper007Bond’s post.

  2. Copy/pasting the embed HTML is a bit of a pain, plus it doesn’t play too nicely with the WYSIWYG editor. This will.

And thanks for the coverage, Rick. 🙂

  3. WOW! I find it remarkably easy to embed a video both in my free hosted blog on the wordpress.com domain and in my self hosted wordpress.org install as well. Your post makes me wonder why others were pulling out their hair. It also makes me wonder how it could be any simpler of a process than what I use now. I simply copy the embed code, open the HTML editor and paste it in – VOILA! I’m done. But hat’s off to Viper007Bond who is going to make this process even easier and quicker.
