Strange Love Live: Gadgets, geegaws, and more stuff from CES with Brian M Westbrook

Brian M Westbrook was there. He saw some stuff. And luckily he sat down with Cami Kaos on Strange Love Live last week to give us a rundown on CES and what he saw. Phew! We can still embrace our technolust.

The tech types, they love the gadgets and stuff. And there’s no better place to catch a glimpse of the latest and greatest technology—or even the technology of tomorrow—than the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

But I wasn’t there. Were you? No? Well how are we going to figure out what all the cool new things are? I mean, we need our shiny objects over which to obsess.

Whoa whoa whoa. Calm down. Brian M Westbrook was there. He saw some stuff. And luckily he sat down with Cami Kaos on Strange Love Live last week to give us a rundown on CES and what he found. Phew! We can still embrace our technolust. Read More

AboutUs to Host Another Lunch 2.0 Birthday

Apparently, twos are wild in 2010. Beer and Blog just celebrated their second birthday, and it will soon be Lunch 2.0’s turn.

I’m tickled to announce that the kind folks at AboutUs, who’ve been busy lately, are graciously welcoming Lunch 2.0 back into their offices for the third time.

That’s right. Three is a magic number. The Portland chapter of Lunch 2.0 kicked off at AboutUs back on February 27, 2008, and we returned on February 11, 2009 to celebrate our first birthday.

On February 17, 2010, we’ll be back for a terrible two birthday celebration and the usual networking and socializing.

What entrepreneurs and startups can learn from the whole Conan O’Brien debacle

Conan O’Brien was recently told that his show was going to follow Jay Leno at 12:05. His response? “No, it’s not.” And in those actions are valuable lessons for startups and entrepreneurs everywhere.

[HTML1]Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days… What’s that? Oh. No, nothing against that. I mean, it’s a nice rock. I like that one part over there. I wasn’t being serious. It’s just a turn of phrase, you know?

Ahem. Anyway.

Conan O’Brien, the host of The Tonight Show—a dynasty of late night television—was recently told that his show was going to be bumped back to follow Jay Leno at 12:05. His response? “No, it’s not.” Read More

Reminder: Lunch 2.0 at Extensis Next Week

And we’re back . . . hard to believe that I announced the first Lunch 2.0 of 2010 would be at Extensis on January 20 last Halloween. Equally mind-boggling, to me at least, was the last time we did this was back at Elemental the week before Halloween.

Yeah, I was surprised too and had to recheck those dates. You know what, we should totally do that whole Lunch 2.0 thing again, and soon, like next week.

So, if you missed the whole Lunch 2.0 scene over the last two-and-a-half months, I’m here to feed (ha, pun) that jones.

Mark your calendars now: Portland Lunch 2.0, Extensis, Wednesday, January 20, 2010, 12-2 PM.

Portland-based StepChange becomes part of a burgeoning social agency

Now, there’s another one. On the heels of Bac’n getting gobbled up and Jive snapping up Filtrbox, StepChange Group has announced that they have been acquired by Powered.

When I was looking forward to 2010, I mentioned that I thought there were some acquisitions on the horizon for Portland companies. I mean, based on what’s been happening, it seemed only reasonable that there would be a few. But I had no idea so many of those acquisitions would be rearing their respective heads in the two weeks of 2010.

Now, there’s another one. On the heels of Bac’n getting gobbled up and Jive snapping up Filtrbox, StepChange Group has announced that they have been acquired by Powered. Read More

Round up: Portland-based Jive Software acquires Boulder-based Filtrbox

Were they going to hire? Build out? Acquire? Jive has a bunch of job openings, they’ve been growing an office in the valley, and now, they’ve acquired social media monitoring company Filtrbox.

Last year, when Sequoia Capital pumped another $12 million into Jive Software’s war chest, one of the first questions out of everyone’s mouth was: What are they going to do with all of that money?

Were they going to hire? Build out? Acquire? Well, apparently they were planning to do a little bit of all of those things. Jive has a bunch of job openings, they’ve been growing—and outgrowing—an office in the valley, and now, they’ve started to pick up some other valuable pieces to their puzzle with today’s news that Jive had acquired social media monitoring company Filtrbox. memePDX 019: Cyborg Camp, Nozzl, Bac’n, Seesmic buys Ping.fm, Google Nexus One, 30 hour day again, and begging for reviews

This week, Cami Kaos and I discuss Cyborg Camp 2010, Nozzl launches, Bac’n is consumed, Seesmic acquires Ping.fm, the Google Nexus One phone launches, and doing 30 hour day all over again.

Hey! It’s the first Thursday of 2010. And whether you call it “two thousand ten” or “twenty ten,” you deserve a new episode of memePDX. Guess what? You’re in luck. We recorded one. Just for you.

This week, Cami Kaos and I discuss Cyborg Camp 2010, Nozzl launches, Bac’n is consumed, Seesmic acquires Ping.fm, the Google Nexus One phone launches, and doing 30 hour day all over again. And then we get a little beggy and whiny about iTunes reviews for memePDX. But in a good way. Really. Read More

Joining Strange Love Live Productions and announcing we’ll be doing 30 hour day all over again

Rick Turoczy joins Cami Kaos and Dr. Normal as a producer and partner for Strange Love Live Productions. And we announce the dates for the next 30 hour day, July 2 and 3.

[HTML3]Howdy. Rick, here. I don’t usually do many “introspective” posts. But this seemed warranted. (Although, I’ve been hesitating to post this, because I keep thinking that Cami Kaos and Dr. Normal are going to realize the error of their ways. But given that they still haven’t said, “We were just joking,” I’m going to have to go ahead and run with this.)

In case you didn’t get the chance to tune into my appearance on Strange Love Live’s year end recap, I wanted to let you know that we had a couple of announcements. Read More

Nozzl Media launches a widget that hints at future real-time products

One of the most cryptic and stealthy startups around here lately has been Nozzl. We knew it had something to do with controlling and managing the firehose of information on the Web in real-time.

[HTML4]One of the most cryptic and stealthy startups around here lately has been Nozzl Media. We knew some of the people who were working on it. Really smart people like Steve Woodward and Brian Hendrickson. And we knew it had something to do with controlling and managing the firehose of information on the Web—in real-time.

But beyond that, we had very little hint of exactly what the Nozzl folks were doing. That is, until today. Read More

Bac’n was meant to be consumed

They did it so well, in fact, that Bac’n became almost an immediate target for acquisition. And now, after weighing their offers, they’ve found a company appropriate to gobble up Bac’n, Bacon Freak.

[HTML2]One of the most surprising and successful startups of 2008 2009 (apparently I’m still struggling with that whole “new year” thing) had to be Bac’n. I can’t tell you how many times I heard founders Scott Kveton, Jason Glaspey, and Michael Richardson utter the phrase, “Yeah. We sell bacon. On the Internet.” And every time, they got a kind of weird scrunched-up face look from the audience.

But they did sell bacon on the Internet. And they did it really well. With an incredibly beautiful and technically functional site. They did it so well, in fact, that Bac’n became almost an immediate target for acquisition. And now, after weighing their offers, they’ve found a company appropriate to gobble up Bac’n, Bacon Freak.
