When I was in high school, we didn't talk about startups. Thank goodness things have changed for Portland teens.

Like it or not, startups are part of popular culture. As such, there are any number of Portland high school kids thinking about how they could potentially start a company. This, in my opinion, is a very good thing. Because I firmly believe that startups should be seen as a valid career path. For everyone. Read More

Don't just read all of the stupid things I say about Portland startups, listen to them

No. I didn’t start another podcast. But for reasons beyond my comprehension, I get asked to talk about Portland and startups. A lot. And it just happened again. Twice. And since the topic of conversation is based on you and your startuppy awesomeness, I thought you might like to know. So, if you’ve got a few minutes, tune into these podcasts from Partially Derivative and Launch Yourself. Read More

Think Oregon startups need more angel and seed funding activity? Oregon lawmakers don't

It’s a well known fact that, far and away, the vast majority of jobs in the United States are created by small business. Oregon is no different. And an important part of the ecosystem that makes that growth possible—at least in the world of tech startups—is early stage angels and seed capital. Well, maybe not this year or next year or the next. Because there will be less of that early stage capital to go around, thanks to the Oregon legislature cutting $2 million from its budget. Codifying and extending Portland startups' collaborative nature: Portland Startups Switchboard is a year old

I didn’t really know what to expect. I mean, I knew that Portland boasted an extremely tightly knit and collaborative community. I knew that I was—more often than not—creating bottlenecks and logjams than I was solving by inefficiently connecting people. And I knew that I had an amazing local startup that had a platform for solving these very issues. What the hell, I thought. It just might work. Read More

TechStars curious? Get your questions answered in person by TechStars Seattle and Portland area TechStars alums

While Portland is host to a number of awesome accelerators, our startups have also done their fair share of succeeding in accelerator programs outside of Portland. Most notably Y Combinator and TechStars. And when the timing is right, these leading accelerator programs can propel startups further faster than they ever thought possible. That’s why I’m psyched to have TechStars Seattle swinging by Portland for a little Q&A. Read More

City of Portland looks to adopt startup technology early and often

You’ve got to love it when someone puts their money where their mouth is. Mouths are? When he or she… anyway, you get the gist. That’s why I love this new program from the City of Portland and the Portland Development Commission which is designed to make it easier for Portland to adopt startup technology grown in our own backyard. It’s called the Early Adopter program. And they’ll be kicking off the effort on the morning of Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Read More

New resources for Eugene startups

In many ways, Eugene is way ahead of the Portland startup scene—especially when it comes to the tightly knit gaming community. In other ways, Portland has taken the lead with some concepts. Whatever the case, it’s always nice to have a comparable community to gauge progress and share ideas. That’s why I’m psyched to share these new resources for the Eugene community. Read More
