Going to SXSW? Well then go to Beer and Blog Portland this week to see who else will be down there

The time is drawing near for SXSW interactive, once again. And it promises to be bigger and better than ever. But who from Portland is making the journey down south?

Every year about this time, you start to feel it. It’s drawing near. The largest geeky Web event of its kind. A sort of pilgrimage for the Web types. Where they all head down to, well, Texas of all places. To hang out, attend sessions, and socialize with other people of their ilk. That’s right. I said “ilk.”

Yep, it’s true. The time is drawing near for SXSW interactive, once again. And it promises to be bigger and better than ever. But who from Portland is making the journey down south? Well, there’s no better way to find out—and draw the SXSW types out—than a social event. And that made tomorrow’s Beer and Blog Portland the perfect venue for a little get together. Read More

That new Tweetmeme follow button everyone is all gaga about? There’s some Portland-based Twitalyzer baked in there

When it comes to Twitter, people get a little excited around these parts. In fact, we like to think of Portland as one of the most Twittery towns around. So when TweetMeme released a new “follow me” button that provides some interesting details about you and your Twitter account, it was no surprise that Portlanders—not to mention other folks around the Web—were quick to start banging on it.

What might surprise you, however, is that one local Twitter-focused company is baked right into the goodness that is the new TweetMeme Follow button—and that company is Portland-based Twitalyzer. Read More

Dawn Foster chosen to head up community management for MeeGo, the joint Intel and Nokia open source mobile platform

Dawn Foster known for her work with Legion of Tech, BarCamp Portland, Ignite Portland, Shizzow, and community management will be joining Intel as the MeeGo as Community Manager.

You may remember some news last week that Intel had agreed to partner with Nokia to merge their two Linux-based open source mobile platforms—Moblin and Maemo, respectively—in the hopes of combining their efforts instead of working in parallel. The project was dubbed MeeGo. And I was intrigued. It’s kind of a startup of sorts. And it’s definitely open source-y. And mobile. And part of the Mobilin team is here in the Portland area. So it seemed like something I should follow.

But one of the consistent comments I heard about the deal? “They’re going to need a strong developer community.” Yeah, you think? Read More

Oh stewardess! I speak Jive: Tony Zingale replaces Dave Hersh as Jive Software CEO

By appointing seasoned executive and Jive board member Tony Zingale as interim CEO and moving current CEO Dave Hersh to the role of Chairman of the Board.

It’s no secret that one of the companies here in Portland that motivated me to start Silicon Florist was Jive Software. Back in 2007, it was on the cusp of something big—but still a bit rough around the edges. But as we watched, it grew and matured and focused and changed. Growing, shrinking, and then growing again. Adding new funding and new executive talent. And transitioning.

Today, it has transitioned once again. Taking another step away from scrappy startup toward well-established entity. How? By appointing seasoned executive and Jive board member Tony Zingale as interim CEO and moving current CEO Dave Hersh to the role of Chairman of the Board. Read More

Your open source smarts needed in Portland: Open Source Bridge 2010 call for proposals now open

How about making one of those speakers you? I mean, you’re interesting and stuff. And that’s why I’d love to see you taking advantage of the Open Source Bridge Call for Proposals is now open.

Portland loves its events. And it loves its open source. And nowhere do those two things segue more nicely than with Portland’s own Open Source Bridge, the entirely volunteer run conference for open source citizens.

You may have heard that Open Source Bridge recently announced the dates for this year’s event would be June 1-4. Now, they need interesting open source types to share their passion, their knowledge, and their insights about being a good open source citizen. And how about making one of those speakers you? I mean, you’re interesting and stuff. And that’s why I’d love to see you taking advantage of the Open Source Bridge Call for Proposals. Read More

Another Great Lunch 2.0 at AboutUs

Yesterday, the great folks at AboutUs graciously opened their offices for the third time to Lunch 2.0, celebrating the second birthday of our Portland chapter.

I was curious, so I checked, and in the last two years, we’ve had 24 Lunch 2.0s, averaging one a month, just like I like it.

I always like going to AboutUs. Their space in the Olympia Mills Commerce Center on the southeast waterfront has fantastic panoramic views of downtown and of the northeast neighborhoods. It’s a great, open space with lots of light, a really inviting space.

Coincidentally, Olympia Mills was developed by Beam Development, one of our hosts next month. Read More

Urban Airship rapidly ascends with $1.1 million in funding

Urban Airship – which provides infrastructure for mobile messaging services like Apple Push Notifications for iPhones – has secured $1.1 million in funding, led by True Ventures.

[HTML2]It’s not often that I get to break news. So I always tend to cherish the few moments that I do. And this one is special for any number of reasons. One, it’s a Portland startup in the mobile space. Two, they’re receiving a respectable amount of funding to continue doing what they do, faster. Three, it’s a company that’s less than a year old pulling in seven figures of cash. And four, these are people I’m lucky enough to see almost every day.

That’s a lot of reasons to be happy. So I couldn’t be more ecstatic to finally announce that Urban Airship—the company that supports the mobile development community by providing infrastructure for mobile messaging services like Apple Push Notifications for iPhones—has secured $1.1 million in funding, led by True Ventures.
