For some reason, as I write this, my mind drifts to Horton Hears a Who! You know, where Horton the elephant finds an entire city of people who are invisible to the naked eye? And he knows that they are there—and will do anything to protect them—but no one else believes that they are there?
You see, Horton’s predicament is somewhat akin to the situation we’ve got with startups, independents, and open source types here in Portland. With the tech community that flies below the radar. They’re here. They exist. But they’re more obscured from view then they should be. Spring is here, and that means tech conference season, among other things.
WebVisions, the locally-grown conference focusing on the future of design, content creation, user experience and business strategy, is celebrating its tenth year.
Ten is a lot of years when you’re talking about anything, but especially when it’s related to tech. Think about what you were doing ten years ago if you want proof.
Anyway, the tenth iteration of WebVisions is coming up fast. It’s May 19-21 at the Oregon Convention Center, in case you didn’t know, and Brad Smith (@webvisions) and his team want to buy you lunch this Wednesday, April 14.
I’m going to try and prevent myself from assaulting you, gentle reader, with any trite phrases or comments about the Portland mobile scene “rocking out” or whatever. But honestly, it’s really really difficult when opportunities like this arise.
You see, there are two things that have hit my plate recently that are just too good to pass up. First, Portland-based Urban Airship—makers of magical behind the scenes technology that helps mobile app developers communicate with their customers—has landed Interscope Records as a customer. And second is Rock Show, a new Portland-developed app that brings a gallery of beautiful concert posters to the iPad.
