WebVisions Hosting Lunch 2.0 on April 14

Did you know WebVisions is celebrating its 10th year this year?

I wonder what the sessions were in 2000, maybe “Looking ahead to Internet Explorer 6”? We’ve come a long way since then, and Brad Smith (@webvisions) and his great team have continued to produce a great conference, mixing design with technology and trends.

Anyway, WebVisions will be hosting Lunch 2.0 on April 14, about a month before the conference, which is May 19-21 at the Oregon Convention Center.

If you’re not familiar with WebVisions, this will be a great opportunity to learn more about a gem of a conference held in our backyard firectly from the organizers and past attendees. Read More

During a SXSW panel on startups in smaller metropolitan areas, I spent some time talking about how venture capital was a bit more difficult to come by in towns like Portland. But I’ll be darned if some awesome Portland startups—like Urban Airship, ShopIgniter, and ActiveTrak—aren’t working to prove me wrong. And now? Another Portland startup has joined the list.

Reminder: Oregon Film, Beam Development, Hive-FX Lunch 2.0 is Wednesday

Friendly reminder, this Wednesday, March 10, Oregon Film, Beam Development and Hive-FX will be co-hosting Lunch 2.0 at Hive’s offices in the SE waterfront from 12 to 2 PM.

Hive is easy walking distance from AboutUs where we were last month, in case you need some geographical perspective.

This lunch should be interesting, since it theoretically combines several different local communities into a single room, sparking some unusual and enlightening conversations.

I say theoretically because you never know who will/won’t show up and what will/won’t transpire, but I’m pretty confident this one is going to be different.

And it also seems that “can’t get funded in Portland” argument continues to spring leaks in 2010. First, Urban Airship found funding. Dawn Foster chosen to head up community management for MeeGo, the joint Intel and Nokia open source mobile platform

Dawn Foster known for her work with Legion of Tech, BarCamp Portland, Ignite Portland, Shizzow, and community management will be joining Intel as the MeeGo as Community Manager.

You may remember some news last week that Intel had agreed to partner with Nokia to merge their two Linux-based open source mobile platforms—Moblin and Maemo, respectively—in the hopes of combining their efforts instead of working in parallel. The project was dubbed MeeGo. And I was intrigued. It’s kind of a startup of sorts. And it’s definitely open source-y. And mobile. And part of the Mobilin team is here in the Portland area. So it seemed like something I should follow.
