ActiveTrak GadgetTrak Mobile 3 available off the shelf at more than 2000 independent wireless retailers

That’s why Portland-based ActiveTrak works to protect them with their GadgetTrak Mobile security software. And now, even more folks have access to that protection. You see, a beta of GadgetTrak is being added to handsets at 2,300 independent wireless retailers.

When it comes to technology, sometimes the most important devices are also the easiest to lose. Take mobile phones. Small, compact, loaded with data, and easy to move, they’re often the target for some of those more nefarious types.

If your stuff gets stolen, wouldn’t you rather track all of the culprits from one GadgetTrak dashboard?

It’s fairly safe to assume that—in a day and age of handheld electronics—if a thief happens to make off with your belongings, the culprit is likely to nab multiple pieces of technology at once. And that can make tracking and recovering them even more challenging.

It could, that is, until now. If you’ve got ActiveTrak’s GadgetTrak 3, I mean. Read More

ActiveTrak (formerly GadgetTrak) lands first round of funding for thief-nabbing technology

Today, ActiveTrak announced that they had secured their first round of funding. And while an amount was not provided, they did provide details on where the investment will be channeled

One of the most interesting boostrapped companies I’ve followed during my tenure here on Silicon Florist has to be ActiveTrak (the startup formerly known as GadgetTrak). And honestly, I always saw them as a dark horse around here.

They have a compelling consumer-focused product that helps people recover stolen laptops and mobile phones. They get major media coverage more than any local startup I know. And they continue to pitch as hard as any company—they’ve presented at OEN’s Angel Oregon three times—I’ve seen. And yet, they couldn’t really seem to land funding. Until now. Read More

Juice Pitcher: Help GadgetTrak join TheFunded and maybe even the funded

If you’re in an early stage startup, you’ve likely no problem coming up with ideas. You’re probably confident that you can bend technology to your will. And you’re still likely fueled by the passion of bringing your project to life. In fact, if there’s one area that causes problems, it’s one that has very little to do with your startup, at all. The problem? Finding the time to make the right connections—and making sure you’re getting in front of the right people.

That’s what make things like Juice Pitcher—an opportunity to pitch friends of TheFunded—such a great opportunity. And that’s why Portland-based GadgetTrak is trying to get there. Read More

GadgetTrak featured on Portland’s KOIN 6 News

GadgetTrak is a great example. With software that helps people recover lost or stolen laptops or phones, it’s a technology that anyone can understand. And that translates into coverage by more traditional outlets, like TV.

One of the reasons I started Silicon Florist was the hope that I could recognize some local startup efforts that aren’t getting the attention they deserve. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore the ventures that are getting attention from traditional media.

The Oregonian on Apple, iPhone, and the Portland mobile scene

The Oregonian’s Mike Rogoway (Happy Fathers’ Day, Mike!) has a great piece about the burgeoning market supporting Apple products—especially with iPhone app developers—here in the Silicon Forest.

Portland-area startups mentioned in the article include Portland-based Urban Airship, Small Society, GadgetTrak, PheedYou, and Vancouver-based Avatron. Read More

FLIR and GadgetTrak partner to protect spendy infrared cameras

GadgetTrak has signed a deal with FLIR Systems to incorporate GadgetTrak tracking technology into their infrared cameras.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: GadgetTrak may be one of the most underrated startups in Portland. And they just signed another deal that makes me look like I know what I’m talking about.

Awards night in the Pacific Northwest means nods for GadgetTrak, Jive

I’m unofficially dubbing tonight “awards night” for the Pacific Northwest tech scene, given that we had two competing awards shows—Oregon Tech Awards and the Seattle 2.0 Awards—handing out statuettes to impressive tech companies all up and down the Pacific coast.

For the Oregon Tech Awards, two Silicon Florist regulars managed to walk away with top honors. Jive Software was named the Emerging Company of the Year and GadgetTrak was named Cool Product of the Year. The only downside was that Ontier—another one on whom I try to keep an eye—was also in the running for Cool Product. Read More

Windows laptop and netbook owners can rest easier: GadgetTrak launches PC-Trak

With Portland-based GadgetTrak, Mac and mobile users have been a little spoiled. You see, they’ve had access to GadgetTrak’s theft recovery software for a while now. Windows-based users, however? They were still openly susceptible to laptop theft without much hope of recovery.

Until now.

Today, Windows laptop and netbook users are finally getting the same protection as the Mac and mobile folks: GadgetTrak has launched for Windows. Read More

GadgetTrak and WeoGeo make OEN Angel Oregon final round

I’m happy to report that GadgetTrak and WeoGeo have been selected for the final round of OEN Angel Oregon 2009 competition, “the nation’s premier investor/entrepreneur matchmaking event.”

That puts the two companies in the running for a first place prize of $150,000 or a second prize of $75,000.

For those of you who haven’t yet encountered these two cool Portland companies, GadgetTrak is “the company that turns your stolen electronic devices into a sentient Neighborhood Watch for nabbing thieves.” While WeoGeo “supplies surveyors, engineers, cartographers, and scientists with the ability to conveniently store, search, and exchange global mapping and geo-content.”

So who is the competition? The Biotech/CleanTech track features DesignMedix and Tau Science Corporation and the Consumer track features Glide Cycle (I could not stop watching their demo video… something strangely mesmerizing about it) and Wicked Quick.

There are also 20 other companies who get to fly through a one minute elevator pitch—but unfortunately I don’t have their names, yet.

Now, I’m hoping the tech folks can do us proud. We’re still trying to recover from 2008, when Angel Oregon selected an apparel company as the winner.

The Angel Oregon 2009 event will be held March 12 at the Governor Hotel. For more information, see OEN Angel Oregon 2009 on Upcoming or Calagator.
