From Air Sharing to Zipcar: 40+ iPhone apps developed in the Silicon Forest

[HTML1]I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Portland—and to some extent the entire Silicon Forest—has a predilection for building iPhone apps. No, it’s true. There are a number of amazing development shops in town—some one-person, some a few people—building iPhone apps that are attracting users by the thousands.

But who are those folks? There isn’t really any way to search for “apps made in Portland” in the App Store. So I thought I’d take the time to share the developers of whom I know off the top of my head—and of course, I’m always open to your enlightening me on the ones I’ve missed. Read More

And lo and behold, the time for that event is nigh. So if that sort of line-up sounds interesting to you, you’re going to want to get registered for he Silicon Forest Forum this Tuesday and Wednesday out at the Intel Jones Farm campus in Hillsboro. Read More

Who’s building BlackBerry apps in the Silicon Forest?

For all my crowing about Portland being the de facto hub of mobile development, I seem to cover primarily iPhone apps and maybe an Android app every once in a while. Inevitably when those posts go live a few people always ask Is there a Blackberry version?

[HTML1]For all my crowing about Portland being the de facto hub of mobile development, I seem to cover primarily iPhone apps and maybe an Android app every once in a while. Inevitably, when those posts go live, a few people always ask, “Is there a BlackBerry version?”

And that leads me to wonder, is there? Are people in the Silicon Forest building BlackBerry apps?

I’m not a Blackberry user, but I know quite a few people who are. And—basically in any town besides Portland—I run into a lot more BlackBerry users than iPhone or Android users.

That said, I don’t know that I’m following the BlackBerry development space as closely as I could be. Read More

Portland, Oregon, is the most entrepreneurial town in the world

It seems there’s a bit of contention and kerfuffle about a recent Entrepreneur piece on the most “startup friendly cities in the US.” Why? Because Portland—and a number of other “not seen as startup hub” towns—made it to the list while traditional metropolitan juggernauts—like Boston, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle—were left by the wayside.

I didn’t think much of it when I mentioned the Entrepreneur article—Portland is one of the best entrepreneurial cities—the other day.

But a post by John Cook on the TechFlash blog got me doing some heavy thinking about the list—and Portland in general. Read More

Every Silicon Forest vote counts: Fieldrunners, Air Sharing, Stanza nominated for iPhone App Awards

Fieldrunners has been nominated for the Best Tower Defense Game. Air Sharing has been nominated for Best File Utility App. And Stanza has been nominated for Best eBook Reader. Even better news? Your vote could help them win.

Among the “That’s a Portland company?” products that I use on a regular basis, Subatomic Studios Fieldrunners has to be right near the top. And I’m only willing to admit that because I know I’m far from alone in that regard. Another iPhone app that tops the list of favorites? Air Sharing from Vancouver’s Avatron. And then, of course, there’s Portland’s Stanza which was acquired by Amazon.

And now, someone else is recognizing that brilliance. Fieldrunners has been nominated for the Best Tower Defense Game. Air Sharing has been nominated for Best File Utility App. And Stanza has been nominated for Best eBook Reader. Even better news? Your vote could help them win. Read More

Survey: Which Silicon Forest startup organizations do you find most helpful?

If you’ve got a few seconds, I’d really appreciate your providing your opinion on the Silicon Forest organizations that are doing the most to help startups.

[HTML1]With the City of Portland planning to spend more time helping startups, I got to thinking. “How are we helping startups, already?” I said to myself. “Not only that, but who’s doing a good job of it?”

Now, I easily rattled off any number of organizations who were focused on helping the Portland and Silicon Forest startup environment. But other than my own personal opinion, I couldn’t really gauge who was helping entrepreneurs succeed.

Clearly, I don’t know the answer to that question. But you know who does? You. That’s why I’m asking you to tell me. (And once you tell me, we can tell everyone else.) Read More
