Happy hours. They’re a thing. For real. And not so long ago, there was a community happy hour that grew into a really, really big thing. And an important and formative thing. But it didn’t start that way.

It goes to 11: Silicon Florist is officially a tween
I’m tired, Portland. For any number of reasons. But mostly because — after more than a decade of writing this blog on a weekly basis — this community still feels like it needs a ton of work. You must be tired, too. Because you have all made a ridiculous amount of progress against any number of odds. And you’ve created and innovated and persevered. But there’s still so much more to do. And not a lot of help to do it.
Show your appreciation for Beer and Blog Portland’s favorite server, Lexie
If you’ve been to Beer and Blog Portland in the past year or so, you’ve likely had a beer. Or a drink. Or some food. And it’s highly likely that your order at the Green Dragon was taken by Lexie, who has single handedly been dealing with the Beer and Blog crowds, week in and week out.
It’s not easy. Especially when it gets crowded. And the Beer and Blog folks realize that. That’s why this evening is “Lexie Appreciation Day.” Read More

OurPDX goes on hiatus as management plans for ‘doing it right’
And so it is with a bit of a heavy heart that I have to report that Portland Oregon blog OurPDX has been shuttered. I say “a bit” because there is a silver lining to this cloud. You see, there is the promise that the shutters may be reopened once they retool.
As much as I love cheerleading new ventures on Silicon Florist, there are times when I have to talk about less than happy news. Because they affect you, they affect the Portland tech scene, and they deserve to be covered.
And so it is with a bit of a heavy heart that I have to report that Portland-focused blog OurPDX has been shuttered. I say “a bit” because there is a silver lining to this cloud. You see, there is the promise that the shutters may be reopened once they retool. Read More
Time for big kid pants: Silicon Florist is three years old
Three years ago this week, I got a little fed up. I got frustrated because I kept hearing about cool projects that were taking place in and around Portland, Oregon, but I never saw the traditional media outlets or the tech blogs covering those projects.
“Self?” I said to myself. “Why isn’t there a local blog covering the Web, mobile, and open source startups and events in Portland, Oregon? Why oh why isn’t there?” And then I asked myself a much more dangerous question: “Why don’t you start one?” And that is how Silicon Florist came into being. Read More
When I’m writing about Beer and Blog this early in the week, it must be big (Hint: Twice as big)
And there’s the chance that it could happen again this week, as the folks from Involver swing by Beer and Blog to kick Portland’s proverbial tires.
So, you’ve heard of Beer and Blog, right? The weekly geek gathering that has become the de facto happy hour for the blogging and startup scene in Portland?
So have a lot of other folks. And that’s why, when people are visiting from out of town, they often try to stay over Friday night, so that they can get a chance to meet some of the folks from Portland. And what’s more? We try to woo them to Portland. It’s happened before. And there’s the chance that it could happen again this week, as the folks from Involver swing by Beer and Blog to kick Portland’s proverbial tires. Read More
