Silicon Florist: Job postings

I wanted to highlight some of the interesting (read “the only”) jobs that have been posted to the Silicon Florist gig board, this week.

  • Marshall Kirkpatrick is looking for freelance Web design talent
    “I’m looking to have a couple of people I can refer to consulting clients who need web design help. These requests come my way every once in a while and I don’t know anyone who’s available and awesome. Let’s save the world from ugly web apps!”
  • MyStrands is looking for a Community Manager – Evangelist
    “This position will play a key role in creating a community around upcoming services. You will evangelize, create, execute, and evaluate community building and online marketing campaigns in line with MyStrands’ overall strategy. You will develop marketing campaigns, community programs and proactively drive communications, with a strong focus in Portland, Oregon and the Northwest.”

New Feature: Silicon Forest Job/Gig board

It’s officially Spring. And Spring is always a good time to plant some new stuff.

As I strive to make this site more useful for both the folks who are trying to create startups here in the Silicon Forest and the folks who are interested in following those startups, one thing has become abundantly clear to me: there are a lot of people looking for other people to help them.

And sometimes, they’re looking for people to work for them.

So I thought it might be helpful to launch a gig board of sorts. And then I posed a hypothetical question on Twitter. And the response absolutely convinced me it was the right thing to do.

So, I scrambled to create the Silicon-Forest-startup-oriented job and gig board.

Now, it’s not terribly pretty (neither was this blog up until a short while ago), but it is functional.

In the interest of time, I decided to use a canned solution for the proof-of-concept. Call it an agile mentality or use Guy Kawasaki’s phrasing. Either way, it seemed best to get it out there so we could start gathering requirements. But I would like to build something custom that better meets your needs.

So please bang on it, and then let me know what features you would like to see. And if I can’t accomplish that with the canned solution, I’ll work your ideas into the custom solution I’m planning to commission.

Oh, and at this point the job board is completely blank. Which is sort of detrimental to the whole “job search” thing. And, really, who wants to be the first to jump into the pool? Now, I know many of you have more than three jobs to post. And the “underwriting the Silicon Florist” survey directed me to get creative about finding ways to fund the continued development of this site. So, I’ve started the cost of a job posting at $50 for 2 weeks.

That seems reasonable without being exorbitant. So, let’s see how that goes.

pdxMindShare leads me to believe Jive might be hiring, possibly maybe

Well, I was browsing through the latest issue of JiveMindShare… Um. Oopie. I mean, pdxMindShare. And I think, maybe just maybe, Portland-based Jive Software might be hiring for a few positions.

I’m saying, “Maybe.” Don’t quote me on it. I may be reading something into this.

In any case, the laundry list of open jobs a good problem for Jive to have. And it could be that you’re just the type to help fill one of these roles. So I just thought it worth mentioning that Jive Software—proud recipient of a recent $15 million Sequoia investment and a winner of one of the 2007 Oregon Entrepreneur Network awards—is hiring for the following positions:

Baby needs a COO

Word around the campfire It has been confirmed that CD Baby is looking for a short-term Chief Operating Officer (COO). Details about the position are as follows:

CD Baby (cdbaby.com) is looking for a short-term COO with possibility of becoming President.

CD Baby is one of the largest sellers of independent music online, providing retail sales and digital distribution for 200,000 musicians, with over $60M in sales. (And despite what you hear about the rest of the industry, sales are up 35% over last year, here.)

80 employees: 35 warehouse, 30 customer service, 5 digital distribution, 4 managers, and a few mysterious elves.

No music experience needed. We’ve got plenty of musicians here, and are looking for someone with a long proven history leading companies of a similar size, showing drastic operational improvements in a short timeframe.

Some of the areas you’ll be focusing on will be: developing and streamlining processes, improving customer service metrics, and leading the employees through the changes.

We’re looking for you to develop the plan, put it in action, and define the results.

This is a 3-month intensive project and pays $50,000.

You will report directly to CD Baby owner/founder Derek Sivers, and need to provide measurements to prove your operational improvements.

Portland-based CD Baby describes itself as a “little online record store that sells albums by independent musicians.” That little store also happens to be one of the largest sellers of independent music on the Web. It is brother (or possibly sister) to Film Baby and Host Baby.
