I know you’re busy. Building a company from scratch isn’t easy. And with so many things to do, it’s easy to lose track of stuff that’s not on the critical path for you. Which is why I’m taking the opportunity to remind you that applications for PIE, an early stage startup accelerator for product-based companies that has been working to support founders for more than 12 years, are due by March 14, 2022, at 11:59PM Pacific Time.

Interested in coaching or mentoring women-led startups? XXcelerate wants to talk to you
One of my favorite things about the Portland startup community is a willingness to help one another. Rarely do I have a conversation with anyone in town that fails to include “Is there anything I can be doing to help you…?” It’s just the ethos around here.

If you’ve ever applied for anything, it’s likely that you’ve experienced the “we’re extending the application deadline” effect. So it should come as little surprise to anyone — especially since they’ve “done it for practically every year” — that PIE is extending its application deadline. But what may be surprising is the reasoning behind the extension, this time around.

When times get bad, like they are now, it can be an ironically positive time for startups. With folks getting laid off and out of work, with the economy tanking, starting your own thing can often be the most reasonable path forward. And given that Oregon offers unemployment benefits to folks who are starting new things, it’s more even likely that laid off folks around here would be pursuing that path.

For many folks, this whole situation threw them into world where their online presence suddenly became their only presence. And that lifeline to community — and ultimately revenue — was immediately way way more important than it had been, even days earlier. Digital healthcare has long been one of Portland’s strongest areas of startup success and support. But like so many awesome Portland things, it’s also a tightly knit community for which it can be difficult to figure out where to start. That’s why OTRADI Oregon Bioscience Incubator started a regular happy hour. So that making those connections could be easier.
Seeking mentoring from another developer? Thanks to Portland’s collaborative culture you can ask-a-dev
There are any number of things I love about Portland and its collaborative culture. But the one thing that impresses me, time and time again, is the prevalent willingness to mentor one another. To take a few minutes out of your day to help someone else reason through a problem. To share what you believe to be common sense (even though it’s not). And to help others grow into roles—and give back, in turn.
More than venture capital, it's "Mentor Capital": Meet Elevate Capital, Portland's newest investor
The Portland startup scene wouldn’t be much of scene without the capital to fuel its growth. And over the years, it’s been nice to watch that investment community come together, connect, and collaborate to enable some of our most promising young companies gain the initial footing they need to succeed. That said, it’s been a few years since Portland has seen a new investor enter the fray—Rogue Venture Partners and Seven Peak Ventures are among the most recent. Until now. Meet Elevate Capital.
