Ensuring inclusivity in the growing Portland Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality community

It’s no secret that the Portland startup community has more than its fair share of virtual reality and augmented reality activity. But it’s only going to be a truly interesting, compelling, and vibrant with a variety of voices and experiences. That’s why it’s awesome to see folks like Kerri Lynne Thorp who are working to ensure that everyone feels welcome in this burgeoning community.

Have you tried rebooting it? Startup Poker 2.0 and Startup PDX both reboot their community building events

Rebooting. It’s not just for devices and computers anymore. In fact, a couple of Portland events are in the midst or rebooting and changing their format, in the hopes of addressing some of the gaps in our community. And since they’ve both got events coming up in the near future, I thought I’d highlight them.

If you have difficulty falling asleep, perhaps my babble about the Portland startup community will help

Any number of you have had the misfortune of being stuck in a room, listening to me babble about my opinions on the Portland startup community. It happens. What the Portland startup community needs more of… and less of

Editor’s note: Hanging out in the Portland Startup Slack, Kathryn Brown opined that many of the events and organizations trying to support founders in our community seemed a little misdirected. I asked her to elaborate if she could. What I got was a great list of things we should be doing more of… and things we should be doing less of. With her permission, I’m republishing her Slack posts, here. Read More

That escalated quickly: Join the free Portland community job fair on June 1 at the Falcon Building

The Portland startup community—and honestly the Portland community at large—never ceases to amaze me. A few weeks ago, I posted a quickly penned request for the community to consider rallying support for those nearly 800 local folks affected by the Intel layoffs. I expected that a handful of us might be able to throw something useful together. Suffice it to say that I never expected we’d be where we are today. With nearly 200 companies supporting this effort and a free job fair planned for June 1, 2016. Read More
