I know, I know. It’s not exactly a rarity for me to babble about the Portland startup community. What is rare, however, is that someone takes the time to make it intelligible and digestible. But that’s just what Engine has done with their #startupseverywhere series.
It’s no secret that the Portland startup community has more than its fair share of virtual reality and augmented reality activity. But it’s only going to be a truly interesting, compelling, and vibrant with a variety of voices and experiences. That’s why it’s awesome to see folks like Kerri Lynne Thorp who are working to ensure that everyone feels welcome in this burgeoning community.
Rebooting. It’s not just for devices and computers anymore. In fact, a couple of Portland events are in the midst or rebooting and changing their format, in the hopes of addressing some of the gaps in our community. And since they’ve both got events coming up in the near future, I thought I’d highlight them.
Any number of you have had the misfortune of being stuck in a room, listening to me babble about my opinions on the Portland startup community. It happens. And yes, you feel uncomfortable getting up and walking out. I get it. But for whatever reason, I still get invited to talk about Portland startup stuff on a regular basis. And again, for whatever reason, folks even record this sometimes.
While I don’t generally cover real estate sort of things, this one motivated me to post. Because it continues the long line of startups in Portland occupying the same space at the corner of NW 11th and NW Flanders in the Pearl. The Portland startup community—and honestly the Portland community at large—never ceases to amaze me. A few weeks ago, I posted a quickly penned request for the community to consider rallying support for those nearly 800 local folks affected by the Intel layoffs. I expected that a handful of us might be able to throw something useful together. Suffice it to say that I never expected we’d be where we are today.
