Get your team collaborating virtually with RendezView

For the vast majority of us, continuing to work as virtual teams shows no end in sight. And that’s presented a bunch of opportunities for startups to equip us with new tools for working in this mode. The latest from the Portland startup community is RendezView.

A deep dive on Pioneer Square Labs, analyzing its impact and the startup studio model

I shared a piece I read the other day that postulated that incubators and accelerators are “out” and that startup studios are “in.” But what, exactly, is a startup studio? Luckily, we have one of the most prominent startup studios — Pioneer Square Labs — right here in the Pacific Northwest. And as PSL is now five years old, GeekWire recently took the time to assess its impact.

REMINDER: Add your startup — or a startup you know — to the list

I try and track as many Oregon startups as I can. Be they Web based or physical objects. Just so long as they have the potential to grow quickly and be efficient with revenue, they’re interesting to me. But even as much time as I focus on that effort, I’m still often surprised and delighted to learn of new companies right under my nose.

Help crowdsource a definitive list of all Oregon startups

It’s been a year, hasn’t it? Usually around this time of year, I’d likely be waxing philosophic about all of the amazing founders I’d had the chance to meet. Over coffee. Or a beer. But this year isn’t that year is it? (It’s not.) Which has me thinking that I have probably missed out on any number of amazing founders and companies over the past 10 months. And that’s why I’m wondering if it would be possible to get your help resolving that issue.

Perplexed by press releases?

I’ve lost count of how many press releases I’ve written over the last 25 years or so. It’s become such a common occurrence for me — either for my projects or for helping PIE companies — that I sometimes forget that composing them is still a dark mystic art for most folks. But then, inevitably, I get an ill-formed attempt at a press release from a startup and that fact is brought into sharp relief — at the startup’s expense.

Portland’s first week of December is chock full of startup pitches

Apparently, Portland didn’t get the memo about startup stuff quieting down during the holidays. Because the beginning of December has two major pitch events taking place Pitch Oregon and TechfestNW Pitchfest. And that may be just the thing you need to shake yourself out of your tryptophan induced stupor.

A virtual Portland Lunch 2.0 to make some real Portland startup community connections

While the pandemic has caused any number of hardships and hassles for folks, there are a handful of things that have become a bit easier in this fully remote world. Like throwing together virtual versions of events that often require far more logistics to pull off in person. With that in mind — and with so many folks expressing feelings of disconnectedness — I thought it might be a good idea to revive Portland Lunch 2.0 one more time before the end of the year.

Portland’s Paige Hendrix Buckner named COO of Founder Gym

It’s always nice to see other organizations recognizing the depth of talent we have in our midst here in the Portland startup community. And being part of that community, it’s highly likely that you’ve had the opportunity to encounter Paige Hendrix Buckner. She was a serial Portland startup founder, cofounder of XXcelerate Fund, instrumental with the development of the TiE youth entrepreneur program TYE, cohosted TechfestNW, and — as if that weren’t enough — has been a tireless mentor to any number of founders in town. So seeing the news today that Paige has been named the COO of global startup accelerator program Founder Gym? It just made sense.
