WordCamp Portland: WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg to field questions

I don’t need to tell you (but I will anyway): Portland loves open source. But do you know what we love even more than that? Open source founders.

We proudly proclaim Portland the home of the creator of Linux, Linus Torvalds—and of course his four impersonators come late September. And having Rasmus Lerdorf, the founder of PHP, here in town for Open Source Bridge was quite a coup.

And now, we have another open source founder to add to the list. Thanks to WordCamp Portland, WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg will be visiting Portland in September. Read More

Fake Linus Torvalds: It’s like Fake Steve Jobs only open

This may come as a shock to you but any number of people—even completely mediocre bloggers—wind up with people impersonating them on blogs, Twitter, and the like. No. I’m serious. I mean, that’s why Twitter did that whole “verified” thing.

And the bar by which all imitators are measured? Fake Steve Jobs.

Well, leave it to Portland’s newest open source event—LinuxCon—to take the idea of online impersonation and make it more—well—open. Would you expect anything less? Now, four Linux community leaders will be vying for the title of Fake Linus Torvalds. Read More

memePDX: Portland tech news for those short on time and/or attention

Anyone who has spent any time around Silicon Florist realizes that I tend to be a little longwinded. And that’s putting it lightly. Brevity? Not my strong suit. And for many, reading through my lengthy posts isn’t the preferred way of getting their tech news.

So, I’ve been thinking about ways to get you more of the news you want with less effort on your part. And a different form of media seemed to be the best way to do it. So I begged started talking to the Strange Love Live folks and after a series of tantrums and crying fits on my part discussions, they finally agreed to help.

The result? memePDX. Read More

Considering creating cross platform mobile apps? Don’t miss PhoneGap at Mobile Portland tonight

[HTML3]Looking to be a little cruel to your developer friends? Ask a mobile developer when s/he is going to take her/his application cross platform. If only for the entertainment of watching the pained expression cross her/his face. Because nine times out of ten, that’s the type of reaction you’re going to get.

But what if the effort of developing cross platform apps could be simplified by using HTML and Javascript to develop native apps? And what if mobile types could still get access to native handset features using that technique? And what if it could still be sold through the App Store or Market or whatever? What if…? PhoneGap will be answering those what-ifs at Mobile Portland tonight. Read More

Portland Startup Weekend valedictorian Mugasha opens sliced and diced DJ sets to everyone

[HTML3]I’ve been following and listening to Portland-based Mugasha—a service that gives you access to an impressive collection of streaming electronica DJ sets sliced into manageable chunks—since its humble beginnings at Portland Startup Weekend in May 2008. (I’ve got Myon and Shane 54 going as we speak.) Since then, they’ve been covered by Scoble (although the Qik video looks like it’s gone now), got some love when they launched their private beta, and were selected for the SXSW 2009 Accelerator program. But I haven’t been able to really gush about them until now. Read More

PositivePress: Iterasi uses Web archiving technology to track traditional and social media coverage

[HTML2]Now, you may not realize this, but during my day job I’m constantly sifting through media reports. Gargantuan PDFs or documents that contain a series of clipped links and snippets about specific clients or subjects. The reports are unwieldy at best. And I can only imagine what kind of workload this effort creates for the agencies that compile them for me—and any number of other clients—on a daily basis.

Long story short, the whole “tracking media coverage” thing—whether for PR firms or otherwise—could use some help. And don’t even get me started on the whole social media angle.

But now, there may be hope. You see, Portland-based Iterasi might have an answer with their latest effort. Introducing PositivePress from Iterasi. Read More

While there, they share ideas, discuss concepts, and meet a bunch of people in the flesh who they’ve only known as avatars on Twitter.
